Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a system for anchoring structural members, such as structures made of round and profiled tubes of steel, non-ferrous metal, light-alloy and plastics. The object of the system is for tubular members of any size and load-bearing capacity to be erected vertically on any ground, irrespective of the slope or gradient and unevenness. The disclosed system comprises an underground anchoring member such as concrete embedded in the ground. An upwardly extending section member is mounted in the member and carries an adjusting mechanism at its upper end. The adjusting mechanism includes an inclined bearing plate and a flange which is pivotable on the inclined upper face of the plate and a sleeve or bush which is mounted on and inclined to the flange. The sleeve, together with the flange, forms a retaining member which receives the structural member. Releasable fastening elements are provided on the bearing plate and on the flange, the whole arrangement being such that the structural member together with the retaining member can be adjusted to, and locked in, any desired angle in relation to the surface of the ground by relative rotation of the bearing plate and the flange.

Description

g This inven-tion relates to a system for the underground anchoring of structural members, such as tubular structures. The object of the system is for tubular members of any size and load-bearing capacity to be erected vertically on any ground, irrespective of the slope or gradient and unevenness.
The system is especially suitable for erecting small structures such as gates, posts, car-park boundaries, road markings, signs and notices7 road and motorway barriers, fencing, hoardings~ garden tables ~tables for garden restaurants and open-air cafes), (public) benches and seats, children's play-ground equipment, garden umbrellas, rotary clothes lines, and so on.
The system is very versatile and also allows the erection of structures ~sub-structures and shells), such as market stalls and stands, indoor and out-door grandstandsl hutments (standard and emergency hutments), awnings, passages~
railings, bridge anchors (emergency bridges), and for mili~ary purposes, and so on.
More particularly, the system is intended for all small structures and the like which are required temporarily and subsequently are usually intended to be removed.
According to the invention there is provided a system for the anchoring of an elongate structural member in ground regar~lless of the slope Oe the ground surface, said system comprising: an elongate section member adapted to be anchored in an opening in the ground with an upper end thereof positioned adjacent the ground surface, a casing fixedly mounted on the section member with a base thereof perpendicular to the section member; a base member mounted in the casing, on the base thereof and including an elongate slot overlying the base of the casing and an upper bearing surface inclined with respect to the longitudinal - extent of the section member; first fastening means passing through the slot in the base mernber and engaging the base of the casing such that by loosening the first Eastening means, the base member may be displaced longitudinally of said ~ ~, hl~29 slot relative to the casing and rotatccl nrolJnd the :~1rSt :eastening means, and by tightening the first fastening means the base member may be locked in a desired position of displacement and rotation; a retaining member in said base and having a lower bearing surface and an upper portion adapted for mounting said structural member at an inclination to the lower bearing surface, said retaining member being rotatably mounted on the base member Wit}l the upper and lower bearing sur:Eaces engaging in a plane; and secolld fastening means in said casing for fixing - la -the relative positlons of the base and retaining members.
One exemplary embodiment o:f the subject of the invention is shown together with details in the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the underground anchored system on sloping ground, with an article of use projecting upwardly;
Pigure 2 is a plan view of the bearing plate perpendicularly to the inclined plane E-E;
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the underground~anchored system on horizontal ground in the inoperative condition;
~igure 4 is a variant of the adjusting mechanism used for adjusting the retaining member; and Figure 5 is a plan view of Figure 4.
Referring to Figure 1, an upwardly extending section member 3 is fixed by an underground anchoring member 2 in ground 1, the gradient of which is immaterial, with the base flange 4" of a base member 4' parallel to the surface of ground 1. The base member 4' is provided with a bearing plate 4 .. with an upper bearing surface situated in plane E-~ inclined at crn appreci able angle to the base flange 4" of the base member ~'. A retaining membe:r includes a flange 5 with a :lower bearing surface that bears against the bearing surface of plate 4, and a sleeve or bush 6 with a longitudinal axis which is disposed at an angle to flange S. A structural member or an article 7 can be fitted on the sleeve 6 so as to be easily removahle.
~ The flange 5 of the retaining member is pivotally and lockably : connected to a cross-member 14 of the base member 4' by means of a screw 9.
The ends of the cross-member 14 engage in notches 13 situated opposite one ano~her in the inner wall of the base member 4'. Cross-member 14 may be lock-ed in position by means of studs 15 extending through openings in the cross-member and bearing plate 14. When the screw 9 is loosened, the cross-member
- 2 -~h~ 9 l4 car1 be disengaged from base Membe-J ~' hy rotation about the screw 9 so that tlle flange 5 can be removed from the bottom part 4'. When the cross-member 14 is in the locked position and the screw 9 is released, the retain-ing member can be rotated through 360 as required. The base flange 4"
; bears against the base l0' of a casing l0 which is fixed on the sec~ion member
3 and the cover l0" of which is flush with the ground l. Apertures 16 are provided in base l0' of casing l0 to allow for the discharge of water or the like which may enter casing l0 when cover l0" is removed.
The base flange 4" of the base member 4 has a diametric slot ll and is releasably connected to the base l0' of the casing l0 by means of a screw 12 passing through said slot ll. When the screw 12 is released the base member 4' together with its slot ll can be displaced and pivoted às required so that the retaining member together with the structural member 7 can be adjusted to a vertical position and be secured by means of the screws ; 9 and 12 irrespective of the slope of the ground l. When the structural member 7 has been removed, the casing l0 can be closed by means of a cover 10" .
On horizontal ground l as shown in ~igure 3, the adjusting mechan-ism ~, 5 is so adjuste~ and loc1cecl - by rotation of the bearing plate 4 and flange 5 - that the sleeve 6 is perpendicular to the ground l.
In the variant of the adjusting mechanism shown in Figures 4 and 5, the bearing plate 4 and the flange 5 are of disc shape and have arcuate slots 8, 8' near the periphery to allow the bearing plate and the flange 4 and 5 respectively to be pivoted through approximately 360 with respect to one another. The bearing plate and the flange are connected by bolts 9 which allow the members to be locked in the position selectedO
