Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A clip for use in hanging room size carpets for display purposes. The clip comprises two members pivotally connected at their upper ends which are urged together by a lever. The lever is pivotally connected to one of the members of the clip and is adapted to urge the other member toward a closed position as it moves from an upper open position to a lower position wherein it urges the two members together so as to grasp a carpet there-between.

Description
This invention relates to a clip for hanging heavy ~abrics such as room size carpets.
In carpet display rooms several methods have been used for suspending large carpets including the use of bars studded with nails which pierce the carpet. This is not entirely satisfactory as the nails may damage the carpet.
Accordingly it has been proposed to limit the damage to the carpets through the use of a spring loaded clip. However, such clips tend to be hard to open if the spring is sufficiently strong to hold a large 1 0 carpet.
It is, therefore an object of the present invention to provide an over center type clip which is operated by a lever thereby minimizing damage to the carpet while providing ease of operation.
Accordingly the present invention provides a clip for use in hanging room size carpets the clip comprising first and second members --the first member having inwardly extending apertured parallel ears on opposed side edges, the second member being provided with a right angle at its upper end so that a major portion of the second member is spaced from the first member, the second member being provided with an upwardly extending tab received in a slot in the first member and a lever having ri~ht angle bend at its upper end to provide a flange having a tab on each side edge thereof dimensioned so às to be received in associated apertures in the ear, the dimensions of the flange being such that when the level is moved to a position substantially parallel with the second member, the second member is urged toward the first member.
In the drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the carpet clip in the open positionj and Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the carpet clip in the closed position.
Referring now in detail to the drawings the carpet clip shown generally at 10 in Figure 1 is preferably stamped from sheet metal and includes a first member 12 having inwardly extending parallel ears 14 and ~f~
1~7148 16 on opposed side edges. The ears 14 and 16 have apertures 18 and 20.
The side edges 22 of the first member 12 and the lower end edge 24 are bent inwardiy so as to provide a more effective grip on a carpet held t herebetween.
The first member 12 has a right angle bend at its upper portion to provide an outwardly extending projection 26 and a further right angle bend to provide a depending portion 28 to facilitate hanging the clip on a rail, preferably of rectangular cross section. The upper portion of the member 12 is also provided with a slot 30 to receive a portion of a second 10 member 32.
The second member 32 has a right angle bend at its upper end to provide a top wall 34. A tab 36 on the edge of the top wall 34 extends through the slot 3~ and is bent upwardly so as to pivotally secure the first member 12 and the second member 32 together.
Side edges 40 and 42 and a lower end edge 44 of the second member 32 are bent inwardly for purposes described with reference to the first member thus providing a better grip on the carpet.
In order to urge the first and second members together so as to grip a carpet therebetween a lever 50 is provided. The lever SO has an 20 upper portion bent at right angles to provide a top wall 52 a leading edge of which is adapted to engage the second member 32.
The lever 50 is pivotally connected to the first member 12 by tabs or projections 54 and 56 on the s7de edges of the top wall 52 of the lever 50 which are received in the apertures 18 and 20 respectively of the ears 14 and 16.
The dimensions of the top wall 52 of the lever 50 are such that when the lever is raised as shown in Figure 1 the wall 52 exerts little if any pressure on the second member 32. However when the lower end of lever 50 is moved to the position shown in Figure 1 lower portions of the 30 first member 12 and the second member 32 are urged together.
