Abstract

A B S T R A C T

An apparatus for conveying substantially flat articles is dis-closed, The apparatus comprises the combination of a conveyor having a sup-port surface for supporting flat articles transported by the conveyor, a vacuum chamber positioned adjacent the conveyor and having a face substant-ially flush with the support surface and apertures through the face adapted to be covered by a flat article conveyed over the face by the conveyor.
The article is held against the face by a vacuum within the chamber. An obturator overlies the face of the vacuum chamber to close the aperture in the absence of an article covering the face. The obturator is adapted to be moved out of its overlying relationship with the face in response to movement of a flat article into a position between the face and the obturator, In a preferred embodiment, the obturator is a spring steel element.

Description

~3~

The present invention concerns a suction conveyor used, for ex-ample in blank folding machines, and including a belt conveyor jointly op-erating wi~h a vacuum chamber, ~he latter being substantially parallel with the belt conveyor.
Suction conveyors used until now for blank folding generally con-sist o one or ~ore conventional belt conveyors operating jointly with at least one vacuum chamber. The vacuumq~ located in parallel with the belt conveyor with its top face ~ level with the conveyor belt. The vac-uum chamber is adjustable along the conveyor so that suction can be applied on ~he blank area required. This arrangement has the advantage of enabling the appropriate area of the blank to be pressed against the vacuum chamber in order to effec~ certain operations such as folding of a flap, for instance, whilst the blank is firmly hald, Such suction convPyors, however, when use~
two by two and side by side as is generally done, have the inconvenienc0 of no longer ensuring sufficient suction on the bl~nk with one of the vacuum chambers not wholly closed. In fact, as the vacuum chambers are connected ~o the same vacuum source, the 105s of racuum by one of the ~wo vacuum cham-bers will conspicuously impair the suction power of the o~her~

It is therefore an established act that blanks with outline ~v,o~
~ es that do not completely close the vacuum chambers cannot be processed, 0~ the o~her hand9 all vaouum chambers used on the machine are fed from a sin~le vacuum source~ This requires control of the vacuum supply to the vacuum~chambers, by means of electromagnetic valves or example, bringing about a considerable increase of the cost price of such a suction conveyor.
The present invention is concerned with a remedy for the afore-mentioned disadvantages, 2nd has the objectives of enabling the processing of blanks, the outline or processing method of which prevent the use of suc-tion conveyors of known fo~m and elimination of ~he devices here~D~ore nec-essary for vacuu~ control of the vacuum chaMbers.

According to ~he present inven~ion there is provided ~=-a~F~tu~-~83,~

a suction conveyor for use in a ~lank handling apparatus, comprising a belt conveyor for joint operation with a vacuum chamber arranged in parallel relationship with respect to said conveyor, the chamber having a housing spaced transversely relative to the conveyor so that the conveyor does not con~act the chamber housing and the vacuum chamber being provided with obturators which can be moved by the blanks to allow the blanks to pass between the upper part of the vacuum chamber and the said obturators.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the present invention:
Figure 1 is a schematic plan view of a blank conveyor of known type;
Figure 2 is a side view of Figure l; and Figure 3 is a sectional drawing of a vacuum chamber used for a suction conveyor embodying the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 is a schematic plan view of a blank conveyor device of known design with two conveyor assemblies 1 and 2, equipped with vacuum chambers 3, 4 and 5 respectively. The jobs to be per-formed on the blank 6 shown with dot~and-dash lines comprise in the present case, turning over a composite rear flap 6' and a single flap 6". It is evident that blank 6 cannot be held by a device above the conveyor when the flaps are folded by means of rotary folding hooks 7. Consequently9 the use of vacuum chambers 3~ 4 and 5 res-pectively yields numerous advantages. However, as the blank 6 is moved in the direction of arrow 8, the vacuum chamber 3 becomes open to atmospheric pressure, the consequence of which is the vacuum within the vacuum chambers 4 and 5 will no longer be sufficient to hold blank 6a securely. The vacuum chambers 33 4 and 5 are fed from a common source (not shown). -~ 2 _ .

Figure 2 is a sidc YieW of Figure 1 and shows the way in which the flaps 6' and 6" are folded by the rotary folding hooks 7, Folding ~akes place ~n the moving blank 6. For this purpose, the rotary folding hooks 7 are controlled in such a way that they follow the motion of the blank.
Figure 3 is a sectional drawing of a vacuwm chamber used for a suction conveyor according to an embodiment of the invention, A vacuu~
chamber 3 is fitted on a block 10 with locked rod 9 by means of devices not shown, Block 10 is shiftable along the roller track beam 11 of conveyor 12 within grooYe 13. It can be held in place appropria~ely by means of the screws 14 acting, for example, on T nuts (not shown), The orifice 15 of the vacuum chamber 3 is connected to a vacuum source (not shown) by means of a hose 16. An inlet guide 17 is fi~ted against one of the sides of the vacuum chamber 3, Vacuum chamber 3 has two oblong apertures 18 and 19 in its upper surface 29. Both of these apertures are peTmanently closed by means of a spring steel shutter 20 ~itted on a rod 21, Rod 21 is mounted in block 22 and is locked therein by m~ans of set scTew 23. Block 22 is moun~ed on a square crossbar 24 and is held in position by means of set screw 25, In the conveyor 12, belt 26 is supported by rollers 27 themselves arranged on a U-shaped frame member 28, Blank 6, conveyed by bel~ 26, moves in the direc-tion of arrow 8 and moves into a position be~ween spring steel shu~Sers 20 and the upper face 29 of vacwm chamber 3 ~hereby being held by ~he vacuum within chamber 3, Owing to this construction, all electro-pneumatic devices for the vacuum control can bc eliminat~d so that the cost of such a conYeyor will be consid~rably lower, independently from the fact tha~ a design of this kind ensures easier machine processing blanks wi~h complicated outlines.
