An electronic timepiece has a display which can be changed by an external instruction or the like, characterized in that the display is provided with Means to indicate the quanta being displayed. In one form, a digital electronic timepiece comprises a time standard oscillator: time of day information counting means for counting oscillations derived by frequency division from said oscillator: time of day information and calendar information digital display means:
selecting logic circuit means for selecting output from said time of day information counting means or from said calendar information counting means for display by said display means:
a manually operable switch for controlling said logic circuit means to select either time of day information or calendar information for display: and auxiliary indicating means, additional to the aforesaid display means, and also con-trolled by said switch, for indicating which information has been selected for display.

Description

``` 1~'75916 This invention relates to an electronic timepiece and, more particularly, to a construction to discriminate the content such as a time, date or the like which is displayed in the display portion.
Conventionally, a timepiece which changes the display con-tent does not employ a method to display the content, i.e. a time or a date, and a user must discriminate the display content from experience. Otherwise, a timepiece of this sort employs a method to return to the original display content after a fixed period of time and a new display is discriminated from the previous display.
Thus according to the conventional type, it is impossible to dis-criminate the display content intuitively, and it is annoying for a user.
The present invention provides a method that a user can intuitively discriminate the changed display content by displaying symbols, marks or the like (for example, for time display > TIME, HOUR, MIN or non-display, and for date display ~ CALENDAR, DAY
DATE, MONTH or the like) which corresponds to various types of display.
In accordance with the in~ention, a digital electronic time-piece comprises a time standard oscillator, time of day information counting means for counting oscillations derived by frequency division from said oscillator, time of day information and calendar information digital display means, selecting logic circuit means for selecting output from said time of day information counting means or from said calendar information counting means for display by said dispLay means, a manually operable switch for controlling , ~ `
.
759~6 said logic circult means to select either time of day information or calendar information for display, and auxiliary indicating means, additional to the aforesaid display means, and also controlled by said switch, for indicating which information has been selected for display. In a preferred form, the auxiliary indicating means com-prises two indicating devices, one for indicating when time of day information has been selected for display.
Figure 1 is a block diagram of an electronic timepiece according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a selected block diagram showing fundamental principles of Figure l; and Figure 3 is a constitution diagram showing the standard display and the commanded display.
Numeral 11 is a time standard source, 12 is an oscillating circuit, 13 is a divider, 14 is a minute counter, 15 is an hour counter, 16 is a day counter, 17 is a month counter, 18 and 19 are selecting logics, 20 and 21 are decoders, 22 is a segment display, 26 is a CAL display, 27 is a TIME display, 23 is a method of exter-nal command instruction, 24 is a pull-up resistance, and 25 is an inverter.
- la --` 1075916 Figure 1 shows a block diagram of a timepiece embodying the present invention. This is an embodiment of a timepiece in which time is normally displayed, and date is displayed on receipt of an external instruction (hereinafter the external instruction to change the display is described as a command).
According to Figure 1, the reference numeral 11 is a time standard source which includes a quartz crystal or a CR time con-stant circuit or the like. Numeral 12 is an oscillating circuit to oscillate the above mentioned time standard source. Numeral 13 is a divider to transduce the oscillating signal into a minute period pulse. Numeral 14 is a minute counter to count by 60 the minute period pulse. Numeral 15 is an hour counter to count by 12 or 24 the minute period pulse (an hour period). Numeral 16 is a day counter to count by 31 the hour counter output (a day period).
Numeral 17 is a month counter to count by 12 the day counter output (a month period). Numerals 18 and 19 are selecting logics to transduce the counter output which is fed to decoders 20 and 21 by the external instruction method 23.
Numeral 24 is a pull-up resistance to hold the electric potential of an external instruction terminal 23, numeral 25 is an inverter, and numeral 22 is a segment display. Numerals 26 and 27 are marks to discriminate the display content, which are dis-played as "TIME" and "CAL" for convenience.
In the above mentioned construction, when the external in-25 struction method 23 is not connected, line 30 is in logic "0" and the timepiece displays time if the selecting logics 18 and 19 res-pectively select minute and hour counter outputs. Then "CAL" dis-play disappears as the line 30 designates "0" and "TIME" is dis-played as the line 31 designates "1".
When the external instruction method 23 is on (i.e. com--manded), 30 is in logic "1" and, since the selecting logics 18 and 19 respectively select day and minute counter outputs, the time-piece displays date. Besides, "CAL" display illuminates as 30 is "1" and "TIME" display disappears as 31 is "0".
Thus, a method to display "TIME" when minute and hour is displayed and to display "CAL" when day and month is displayed can be obtained.
For reference, a circuit of the selecting logics 18 and 19 are shown in Figure 2.
In Figure 3, display conditions of time display and date display are shown.
By the above-mentioned method, the user can discriminate the display content when the display content is changed. There-fore, the user knows what the changed display means, and the pre-sent invention can beattained in the Integrated Circuit construc-tion.
According to the present invention, "TIME" is displayed at standard display and "CAL" is displayed at command display, and it is possible to discriminate the commanded display and the stan-dard display as: standard display > non display, commanded dis-play ~ "CAL", and both of which are exchangeable.
Besides, this invention can be applied as well even if the changeable content is more than 3.
lA-lF, 2A-2F and 3A-3F in Figure 1 corresponds to the marks in Figure 2.
