Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A foldable seat of the kind for use with foldable baby strollers is formed of a laminar assembly. A series of flat, slat-like rigid elements are disposed adjacent to each other in the direction of the length of the seat back. On one side of each of the slats, foam material is preferably disposed.
The front and back of this arrangement are covered with two flexible sheets.
The sheets are joined together along separation zones between the slats. The combined assembly is sufficiently rigid and permits folding.

Description
- ~C373795 The present invention relates to an improved back for foldable seats. More particularly, the invention is directed toward a back for the seats of baby strollers of the kind where the frame ~olds by bringing its side-pieces together.
As is known, -the backs of the seats of strollers of the kind where the frame folds by bringing its side-pieces together are usually formed by a flexible sheet of canvas, plastic or equivalent. Such a back arrangement is not particularly suited ~or supporting the child's back because, due to its ~ -lack of rigidity, the seat back curves and the infant's back will accordingly be arched. Such an arrangement clearly is deleterious from a physical point of view and may indeed cause physical harm when used over a l~ng period of time.
An object of the present invention, therefore, is to improve the back support available in foldable stroller seats.
Another object of the present invention is the provisions of a foldable seat back which is simple in construction and economical to manu-facture. `
A further object of the present invention is the provision of aseat arrangement which provides substantial support in a longitudinal direc~
tion, but which permits folding in a transverse direction.
A still further object of the present invention ls the provision of a foldable stroller seat back which will avoid the possibility of harm to infants which may result from insufficient back support.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a baby stroller of the kind in which the frame is folded by bringing together its side members and in which the seat comprises a double sheet of flexible material secured to the frame and forming the seat proper, and a seat back comprising a double sheet of flexible material extending upwardly from the rear edge of the seat, the seat back being provided with a plurality of sub-stantially flat rigid elongate members, said members being covered by therespective front and rear sheets of flexible material of the seat back which are attached to one another and are arranged to hold said elongate members in 9~
..... . .... . . . .
~'' ., , ,, ' ~73795 spaced relationship in such a manner that, in the erect position of the baby stroller, the elongate members are substantially coplanar and, during folding of the baby stroller, the spaces between said elongate members permit said members to be displaced relative to said plane to permit a side folding action of the seat back to take place.
In a preferred arrangement, a sheet of foam material is provided between at least one side of the components and the flexible sheet on that side of said components.
~ `or a better understanding of the present invention, reference is made to the following description and accompanying drawings of an embodiment of the invention and the scope of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective which illustrates the unfolded back.
Figure 2 corresponds to a detail in transverse section of the back, also unfolded.
Figure 3 shows the back itself in plan view in the folded position.
Referring to the drawings, shown there is the improved back for foldable seats. The back consists of a laminar assembly of a certain stiff-ness which comprises a series of rectangular slats or plates 1 of a material of appropriate rigidity, such as plastic, wood, aluminum or other suitable material. The slats 1 are disposed close together with their longitudinal edges in the direction of the length of the back, and, to the rearward side of the slats 1, a flexible sheet 2 is applied, of plastic material. On the front side of the slats 1, a padded plate of foam rubber 3 is applied which is covered by a flexible plastic sheet 4.
The flexible plastic sheets 2 and 4 are joined together along their contour by thermowelding so that they completely cover the flat slats 1 and the padded plates 3. In fact, in the areas corresponding to the side-pieces of the back, the plastic sheets are prolonged and cover two rigid slats and as many padded plates, forming two protective wings 5 and the sheets continue '~ - 2 -" , ~:373~95 downwardly ~o form the respective seat 6. ~ .
The flexible sheets 2 and 4 are joined by thermowelding to the padded plate 3 in the separation zones between the flat slats 1, as is indi-cated in Figure 2. In particular, this is done along linear zones 7 in which the laminar assembly is thinned and which permit the ar~iculation of the slats among 2a -.. .
, , ~L~73'795 themselves and the lateral folding of the back by folding over (doubling) the thinned zones. This folding occurs in zigzag form, as is seen in Figure 3, and is obtained by folding the baby stroller by bringing together the laterally opposite elements of the frame, which elements comprise the branches 8 of the harness or of the support of the back, ~he wheel-holding arms~ etc., as is common.
When folded, the back occupies very little space, and when it is unfolded, it offers a suitable rigidity which permits the convenient support of the back of the child sitting in the seat 6.
It is considered within the scope of the invention that the arrange-ment of the slats 1 and their number may vary, so that the zigzag folding can adopt another similar configuration which is different from that illustrated in Figure 3. It is also within the scope of the invention that the back has ~`
wings of a form different from that illustrated or has no wings whatever.
While the present invention has been disclosed with reference to specific illustrative embodiments, it would be obvious to those skilled in the art that other changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the true spirit and scope of the present invention. It is intended~
therefore, that all such changes and modifications as would occur to an indi-vidual of skill in the art are encompassed by the scope of the appended ` claims.
