Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A holder for cartridge tapes spans the interior roof surface of a vehicle and has a plurality of open compartments for retaining the tapes side by side.
A holder for cartridge tapes spans the interior roof surface of a vehicle and has a plurality of open compartments for retaining the tapes side by side.
Description
3'7 This invention relates to storage means for the interior of a vehicle and in particular to means for storing tape cartridges of the 8-track or cassette varilety.
Many vehicles are now equipped with stereo tape players and storage of the tape cartridges in a vehicle is a problem.
Suitcase-type h~lders are available but they take up room in the seating area of the vehicle and it is di:Eficult and dangerous to rummage through such a holder and select a tape while the vehicle is in motion. Tapes are requently stored in the glove compartment of the vehicle, but this can be very inconvenient to reach while driving and only a few cartridges can be stored in this manner.
The present invention provides a solution to the above problems by way of a tape cartridge storage rack which can be easily installed and removed from the ceiling area of the vehicle, and which extends from one side of the vehicle to the other. The rack is made preferably from a flexible material such as plastic and due to such flexibility, the entire holder can be quickly removed from the vehicle for use in another, or in a residence. Installed in a vehicle adjacent the roof thereof, all the tapes are out of normal sight from thieves.
In accordance with one broad aspect, the invention relates to a device for storing tape cartridges in a vehicle comprising a molded strip of resilient plastic material of a le~gth sufficient to span the interior roof surface of said vehicle, length of the strip being selected to snap fit between the interior window moldings on either side of said vehicle thereby arching and biasing the strip against the interior of the vehicle roof, the width of said strip being less than the length of said cartridge; and a plurality of integrcllly formed, T-shaped ribs spaced equidistant along one face of said stxip 105~233'~ ~
normal to the length thereof and ~orming thereby open, juxtaposed, rectangular slideway channels defining open compartments ~or said cartridges.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings wherein;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the storage rack - lA -~Lo5,'~337 installed in a vehicle;
Figure 2 is a plan view of a section of the storage rack; and Figure 3 is an end view of the section shown in Figure 2.
As shown in Figure 1, the tape storage device 10 comprises a flexible base or strip 12 of plastic material of sufficient length to snap into position wi~h its ends 14 wedged against the top of the vehicle window trim 16. Preferably the strip 12 would be retailed over-long for a given group of vehicles and then trimmed to the proper length for each individual vehicle. When cut to the proper length, the strip 12 is pressed up against the roof surface as shown.
A plurality of T-shaped ribs 18 are molded onto the strip 12 and as seen in Figures 2 and 3, the ribs extend normal to the length of the strip 12 and are spaced ~hroughout the length of the strip to form cartridge receiving compartments 20.
Each rib 18 has a leg 22 juxtaposed to the adjacent leg of the next rib, and a top strlp 24. As shown, the spacing of the rib elements 18, 22 and 2~ is such that a tape cartridge 26 is held therein snugly, but relea~ably.
If necessary, a stop tab 28 can be molded onto-the strip 12 along one terminal edge thereof to prevent a cartridge from accidenkally sliding out the forward end of its compartment as viewed in Figure 1. Instead of having the stop 28 on the position shown, a stop 30 shown in phantom line in Figure 3 could be secured to the ends of each rib 18.
It will be appreciated that the present holder can be used for either 8-track or cassette cartridges or a combination holder of half cassette compartments and half 8-track is also within the realm of the invention. Therefore, while the invention has been described in connection with a specific embodiment thereof and in a specific use, various modifications thereof will occur to those skilled in the art wi~hout departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
