MODULAR CONDUIT SYSTEM
ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE

The plurality of conduits in side by side relation-ship with their longitudinal axes parallel are secured in this position by means of connectors, the ends of the conduits at one end of the assembly are positioned in a plane substan-tially perpendicular to the axes of the conduits and the opposite ends of the conduits are positioned a second plane substantially parallel to the first plane. Bell couplings are integrally formed at said one end of each of said con-duits. The connectors include a first connector spaced of said ends and secured to all said conduits to hold said con-duits with their opposite ends in said planes and at least a pair of further connectors said further connecting means being positioned between 6 & 24" from said one and said other ends respectively.

Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a modular conduit system more particularly the prase~t invention relates to a plurality of conduits or ducts interconnec~ed in a specific S relationship with each of fiaid ducts means being provided at one end thereof with an integral coupling means.
DESCRIPTION OF PRIOR ART
~he concept of modular conduit syst~m is not new, attempts have been made to provide a commercially acceptable multiple conduct syRtem for many year~ but prior to the present invention, none have been satiæfactory. Some of the earlier attempts were ~imilar to the present inYentiOn but all failed for one reason or another.

One of the earlier attempts i8 shown in Canadian Patent 394,953 issued Oct. 21/30 to Parker. This patent the individual ducts are secured together by means of circular rings through which the conduits pass. The spacing of the conduits is adjusted by the thickness of the encirculing ringq or by auxiliary ~pacer numbers. These encirculing rings are secured firmly to the ducts. The system of this patent ha~ never been commercially accepted, it i8 believed due to the spacing and arrangement of the joining collars and the mode of coupling.
A similar technlque for securing the conduits to-ge~her i8 shown in Canadian Patent 293,972 issued Oct. 15~29 to Burke et al, how~ver, in this arrangement star-~haped con-necting numbers are interposed between the conduits and each conduit i8 ~ecured over by a 90 radius to one section of the star. Another mode o~ securing the conduits together is shown in Canadian Pat~nt 293,g73 issued Oct. 15/29 ~o Burke, in this technique plate~ are provided with holes through which the conduits are pas~ed. The conduits are secured to these plates.

. ~ . - . . .

1050~50 None of the above technique~ have g~ined any commercial acceptance, despite the desire and many recent attempts to utilize multiple conduit unit~ in a modular ~ystem. Prior to the pre~ent invention the only commercial ~ystem required individual conduits to be ~ecured together in the field.
SUMMARY OF T~E INVENTION
It i~ the ob3ect of the present inVention to pro-vide a multiple conduit system, pre-assembled in the factory for burial a~ a unit.
Broadly the present in~ention relates to a modular conduit unit comprising a plurality of eonduits arranged in side by ~ide po~i~ion with their longi~udinal axe~ sub-stantially parallel, mean~ for ~ecuring ~aid conduit~ in ~aid po~ition with the end~ of said conduits at one end of said unit positioned in a plane substantially perpendicular to ~aid longitudinal axes and the opposite ends of said conduits being positioned in a second plane substantially perpendi-cular to said longitudinal axe~, a bell coupling ormed at said oppo~ite ends of each of said conduits, said bell coupl-ing having a tapering inner f~ce adapted to receive one of said one ends of a conduit of anoth~r conduit unit, said means :~
~or securing ~aid conduit~ in s~id position including a ~:
ecuring member spaced from ~aid ends and secured to all of said conduit~ and at lQast ~ pair of connecting means one of said oonn~cting means b~ing po~itioned between 6 & 24 inch from said one plane and another being within 6 & 24 inches of the said second plan~.

Th~ collar~ or contlQ¢tor~ 18, 20 & 22 r~u~t be pro-perly spac~d ~long th~ a;oes of th~ r~spective conduit~ lO, 12, k ~ 050450 14 & 16. Particularly the collars or connectors 18 & 22 must be spaced from the free ends of the conduits 10, 12, 14 & 16 by ~pecific distances indicated by the dimen~ions x & Y.
The intermediate connectors or securing members 20 may be 5 suitably spaced along the axes of the conduits as required to impart the desired strength characteristics to the unit.
The~e strength characteristics will vary depending on the length and diameter of the conduits of the unit.
It will be noted that the conduit~ 10, 12, 14 & 16 10 are arranged 80 that their one ends, as indicated at 50 are within a plane 52 substantially perpendicular to longtitudi-nal axes of the conduits while the opposite ends 54 are posi-tioned in a plane 56 parallel to the plane 52.
At least one of the securing member~ or interme-lS diate connectors 20 is secured to all of the conduits 10, 12, 14 & 16 80 that their ends 50 & 52 are held in theirrespective planes 52 & 56.
Connectors 18 ~ 22 positioned adjacent the end~
50 & 54 respectively must be positioned from the respective 20 planes 52 & 56 by a distance equal to X or Y respectively.
These distnnces X and Y are preferably equal and must be within the range of 6 to about 24 inches for operability.
Preferably these end connectors 18 & 22 will only be ; ~ temporarily ~ecured to the conduits 10, 12, 14 & 16 80 25 that they may be moved if req~ired to obtain further adjust-,. . ..
meAts or ~rearrangement laterally to facilitate coupling the -nd- of the conduits in adjacent conduit unit~ i.e. the collars 18 or 22 may dmply be slidable-relat~ve to the condults although it~ is preferred to at least tack them in , ~ ~ . . .
3~0~ itlon initially by means of an easily frangibie adhesive connection.
It i8 extre~ly important tha.t each of the conduits ', ~i :
~ . .

~050450 be provided with a b coupler as indicated at 56, 58, 60 &
62 for each of the conduit~ 10, 12, 14 & 16 respectively.
This coupler is ~hown in more detail in figure 5. The bell end~ are flared out at an angle L in range of about 0.5 to 8 and end edges of these couplers are tapered inwardly as indicated at 66. Similar tapers but in opposite direc-tion are provided of the male end of the pipe or condui~
as indicated 68 in figure 5. The tapers 68 & 66 facilitate insertion of the male end of the pipes into to their re-ppective bell couplers on conducts in an adjacent conduits unit and normally at an angle of 15 to 50 to the longitu-dinal axes of the aonduct.
While the invention has been de~cribed with respect to a 2 x 2 arrangement of conduits, it will be apparent that the invention i8 also applicable other arrangements including arrangements of 3 where one would ~imply eliminate one of the conduits in figure 1 arrangement. Other examples include arrangements of 8iX formed by two rows of three or arrange-ments of nine foxmed by three rows of three. If more than nine conduit~ are to be formed into a unit, problems may be encountered at the erection site unless the conduitsare short since the conduit package would then be too heavy to be handled properly.
It is proferred to have the connecters 18, 20 and 22 radially space the conduits 80 that the outer periphèry of the couplers 58, 60 & 62 just contact each other. However, when the unit is to be buried in concrete rather than sand, it may be desirab}e to space the conducts further apart ~o that the concrete aggregste may pass between the conduits and ~ill the ~pa¢s- there between.
In a partlcular arrangement of the present in-vention using four 20 ft long 3~ diameter conduits, were .

secured together in the manner illustrated in figure 1 with the distance~ X & Y each equal to the 11" and a third connec-tor 20 at the mid point of the conduits. The third aon nector was firmly anchored to all four of the conduits while the end connectors 18 & 22 were frangibly connected to one of the conduits only. Bell couplings of a~jacent conduits were in touching relationship and had a maximum in-side diameter (D. ~ax. figure S) of 3.8 and a minimum in-side diameter (D. Min. figure 5) of 3.75 with the bell being approximately 3.5~ long, the tapered ends 64 & 68 were at an angle of approximately 30.
Modification may be made without departing fromthe spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
