Abstract

A modified vacuum distillation and delayed coking process for preparing substantially free flowing coke, preferably substantially free flowing granular coke. A vacuum waste feedstock containing less than 10% by weight of material that boils between 900 <F> and 1040 <F> (from 482.22 <198> C to 560 <198> C is used). ) as determined by HTSD (High Temperature Simulated Distillation). The use of a high boiling residue of the above type favors the formation of granular coke rather than sponge coke or transition coke. Recycling the distillate reduces the scale-forming potential of the heavier coke oven feed load.
