Abstract

THAT INCLUDE A BASE SHEET WITH MULTI-LAYERS". A base sheet for a wet tissue includes multiple fibrous layers. At least one of the fibrous layers of the base sheet includes either 1) polyethylene fibers formed by a mixture of polyethylene and an additive or 2) polypropylene fibers formed by a mixture of polypropylene and an additive. For example, a fully hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin can be used as an additive with polyethylene to form polyethylene fibers that have a melting temperature below approximately 87 degrees Celsius. Polyethylene layers produced with such fibers may have greater strength, produce less cotton fiber and be more firmly attached to an adjacent fibrous layer. Polybutylene can be used as a polypropylene additive to form polypropylene fibers to produce a more flexible layer with improved fixation to an adjacent fibrous layer. The layers of polyethylene and polypropylene can also include natural fibers such as cellulosic fibers. These layers of polyethylene and polypropylene can both be present in a base sheet or can be combined with other fibrous layers. One or both of the outer main surfaces of the generally flat base sheet may be formed by a layer of polyethylene to provide the base sheet with a relatively smooth outer cleaning surface. The polypropylene layer can usefully be combined with a softer layer to provide strength and elasticity to the base sheet. A three-layer base sheet may include an inner layer of polypropylene and two outer layers of polyethylene to thereby benefit from the different properties of these layers. The use of an adhesive with any of the polyethylene or polypropylene fibers allows the properties of the base sheet to be more controlled to adapt the base sheet to the intended purposes.
