Abstract

A base sheet for a wet cloth that includes multiple fibrous layers. At least one of the fibrous layers of the base sheet includes 1) depolyethylene fibers formed by a mixture of polyethylene and an additive or 2) polypropylene fibers formed by a mixture of polypropylene and an additive. For example, a fully hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin can be used as an additive with polyethylene to form polyethylene fibers having a lower melting temperature of about 87 degrees Celsius. The polyethylene layers produced with said fibers can have an improved strength, produce less fiber particles and securely bond to an adjacent fibrous layer. Polybutylene can be used as an additive with polypropylene to form polypropylene fibers to produce a more flexible layer with an increased bond to an adjacent fibrous layer, the layers of polyethylene and polypropylene can also include natural fibers such as cellulosic fibers. These layers of polyethylene and polypropylene can both be present in a base sheet or they can be combined with other fibrous layers. One or both main external surfaces of the flat base sheet can be formed by a polyethylene layer to provide the base sheet with a relatively smooth external cleaning surface, the polypropylene layer can be advantageously combined with a softer layer to provide the base sheet with strength and resilience A three-fold base sheet can include an inner polypropylene layer and two outer polyethylene layers to therefore take advantage of the different properties of these layers. The use of an additive with the polyethylene or polypropylene fibers makes it possible to additionally control the properties of the base sheet to suit the intended needs.
