The first shallowest level is located under a coating cylinder, thus creating an area where the flow rate of molten zinc-coated metal is relatively high. The scum particles remain suspended and do not accumulate at the bottom of the zinc coating pot in that region. A deeper second level is located on one side of the first level. This second level creates a space in which the flow rate of molten metal is less than the terminal velocity of the scum particles. This encourages sedimentation of scum particles in that region. It provides an accumulation area for any bottom scum to be removed later by a scum removal mechanism, such as mechanical spoons or by pumping, without interrupting the coating process.
