Abstract

Equipment preferably intended for use in neonatal phototherapy treatment which uses corrugated plastic optical fibers to emit light laterally to a certain extent. The assembly is essentially a light source, a cable and a light blanket, where the light intensity of the equipment is determined by the power of the light source, the length of the cable, the diameter of the fiber optics and the size of the light blanket. The wavelength of light emitted is determined by the light source with or without optical filters. The light web is essentially formed of a woven or nonwoven web of a specific side-emitting optical fiber where they are connected to a light source input connector, the input being located at the focal point of the light source, which is transmitted along the cable to the light blanket. The plastic optical fibers that form the light web are permanently modified to be light emitting laterally and are woven in a flat and flexible configuration which allows light to be distributed over the entire web surface.
