Description
This application claims priority over US Application No. 62/987,677, filed on March 10, 2020, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes.
The present invention relates to a lubricator for installing and extracting a valve removal plug (VR plug) in a wellhead. More particularly, the present invention relates to a lubricator for installing and extracting a VR plug in a wellhead positioned in a cellar or other narrow and constrained location.
The VR plug is inserted through the open valve(s) and is finally positioned, usually when threaded into position, at the wellhead so that the valve in need of repair is sealed off from the flow of fluids. Typically, a VR plug is installed using a lubricator attached to the horizontal valve. The lubricator is a long tube that maintains pressure while moving an internal tool rod to position and remove the VR plug. Lubricators are well known to those skilled in the art and are generally used in working and recovery operations at a wellhead to manage wellhead pressure during operation. Examples of prior art lubricators can be found in US 2012/0024521 and US 6,827,147, both of which are hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. When a wellhead is installed below ground level, for example in a cellar, there is not enough space for the traditional lubricator installation/removal method. Thus, operators must dig an area on the side of the cellar large enough to accommodate the installation and removal of the VR plug. Alternatively, a specialized lubricator, for example, a telescopic lubricator can be used, which is small enough to adapt to the cellar area. Working conditions in the cellar with the specialized lubricator are still quite restricted.
In one aspect, the present invention relates to a tool for installing a VR plug in a horizontal valve of a wellhead.
In another aspect, the present invention relates to a tool for installing and extracting a VR plug in a horizontal valve of a wellhead.
In yet another aspect, the present invention relates to a tool for installing and extracting a VR plug and a horizontal valve from a wellhead positioned in a cellar or other limited space.
In yet another aspect, the present invention relates to a tool for installing and extracting a VR plug to and from a horizontal valve of a wellhead positioned below ground level, the tool being operable from the ground level.
[008] Essas e demais características e vantagens da presente invenção ficarão evidentes a partir da descrição detalhada a seguir, em que faz-se referência às figuras nos desenhos anexos.[008] These and other features and advantages of the present invention will become evident from the detailed description below, in which reference is made to the figures in the accompanying drawings.
[009] A Fig. 1 mostra uma cabeça de poço posicionada em uma adega com a ferramenta da presente invenção sendo abaixada.[009] Fig. 1 shows a wellhead positioned in a cellar with the tool of the present invention being lowered.
[010] A Fig. 2 mostra a ferramenta da presente invenção abaixada para a adega e conectada à cabeça de poço.[010] Fig. 2 shows the tool of the present invention lowered into the cellar and connected to the wellhead.
[011] A Fig. 3 é uma vista transversal da ferramenta da presente invenção conectada à cabeça de poço.[011] Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the tool of the present invention connected to the wellhead.
[012] A Fig. 4 é uma transversal ampliada da ferramenta da presente invenção e do plugue de VR em posição na cabeça de poço.[012] Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the tool of the present invention and the VR plug in position at the wellhead.
Será reconhecido que nem todas as características de uma cabeça de poço típica são representadas nos desenhos, mas essas características são comuns e bem compreendidas aos técnicos no assunto.[013] Referring first to Fig. 1, a wellhead W is shown positioned inside the cellar C. As can be seen, there is not much distance between the valves V of the wellhead W and the walls of the cellar C. The lower end of the tool is usually shown as 10 is seen near the top end of cellar C. To replace or repair one of the V valves, a valve removal plug (VR) is installed to cut off fluid from that valve. Typically, the wellhead outlet connected to the valves has female threads to receive a threaded VR plug. It will be recognized that not all features of a typical wellhead are depicted on the drawings, but these features are common and well understood by those skilled in the art.
A pressão no lubrificador 12 é mostrada pelo manômetro 21[014] returning to Figs. 2 and 3, the tool 10 of the present invention was connected to a valve V, normally a gate valve, of the wellhead W. The tool 10 comprises a lubricator 12 connected by the elongated tubular housing 16 to an elbow joint 14. Lubricator rod 12 comprises lubricator barrel 11, tool shank 13, socket 15 and access window 17. Tool shank 13 extends through barrel 1, socket 15 and access window 17. As will be explained in more detail, the lubricator rod 12 of the tool 13 is movable axially (longitudinally) with respect to the barrel 11. Although the shank of the tool 13 can be moved axially by hand using a pipe wrench, for example a Parmelee wrench or hex wrench, or other suitable tool through the window access port 17, it is also possible for the tool shank 13 to be connected to a piston 40 (shown in bold) housed within the barrel 11. The piston 40 can be actuated hydraulically/pneumatically in a manner well known to those skilled in the art so as to drive the tool shank 13 axially through the barrel 11. Such hydraulically driven lubricators are well known to those skilled in the art and an example is shown in US 2012/0024521, hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. The lubricator 12 may have connections 19 which connect via hoses or the like to a pressure source (not shown) for pressurizing and releasing pressure from the lubricator in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. The pressurization of the lubricator can be carried out hydraulically, pneumatically, electrically or manually. It will be recognized that the exact insertion and configuration of connections may vary. Furthermore, the lubricator 12 and connections 19 may include seals, valves and control features not shown but well known to those skilled in the art. The pressure in the lubricator 12 is shown by the pressure gauge 21
As shown, the elbow joint 14 is 90°, but the exact angle of the joint can vary slightly, as long as the tool can connect to the valve V. As shown in the drawings, the lubricator 12, tubular housing 16 and elbow joint 14 are separate parts connected together by flange nuts 23, it will be understood that some or all of these components could be formed monolithically.
3 and 4, details of tool 10 can be seen. As noted, a tubular housing 16 is connected between the lubricator 12 and the elbow joint 14. A threaded adapter flange 18 is connected by bolts 25 to the flange of a wellhead valve V. extends through tubular housing 16. A fitting 22 on the upper end of cable 20 connects steel cable 20 to tool shank 13 of lubricator 12. An adapter 24 on the other end of cable 20 is releasably connected to a VR plug 50. In a preferred embodiment, centralizers 30 are spaced along cable 20 to reduce friction and allow free rotation of cable 20. Tube housing 16 can vary in length depending on the size of the wellhead.
Assim, embora a descrição das figuras seja em relação a duas válvulas, a invenção não está assim limitada.[017] As shown in the figures, there are two valves, through which the plug of VR 50 must pass. Tool 10 of the present invention can also be used on a wellhead with a single valve or more than two valves. Thus, although the description of the figures is in relation to two valves, the invention is not so limited.
To install a plug of VR 50 in a wellhead W, the tool 10 is lowered into the cellar C and is connected to the valve V1 by the adapter flange 18 and screws 25. The valves V1 and V2 are opened by turning the handles H1 and H2, respectively. The wellhead pressure is determined by means well known to those skilled in the art, and the lubricator 12 is pressurized by the pressure source (not shown) through connections 19 to equalize or match the pressure in the lubricator 12, tubular housing 16 and junction. at elbow 14 with wellhead pressure W. Pressurizing the lubricator is a process well known to those skilled in the art and will not be described in detail. The pressure inside a wellhead can be anywhere from 0 psi to 10,000 psi. Even at 0 psi, one skilled in the art would want to use the lubricator of the present invention as a safety precaution, for example, in case of downhole plug failure. Matching the pressure to the wellhead pressure ensures that the RV 50 plug does not need to be triggered against high pressure coming from the wellhead and makes installing the RV plug easier and safer. Piston 40 in barrel 11 is actuated to drive tool shank 13 downward. Alternatively, as described above, the tool shank 13 can be manually driven down using a pipe wrench or other tightening tool. The downward or axial actuation of the tool rod 13, in turn, actuates the cable 20 and, consequently, the VR plug 50, through the valves V1 and V2. When the plug of VR 50 is in position, the tool shank 13 is turned clockwise. This in turn rotates cable 20 and VR plug 50. As noted above, the wellhead and VR plug are threaded such that the rotation threadably secures the VR plug 50 in position on the head. W. The tool shank 13 can be rotated by hand using a pipe wrench to rotate the socket 15 in the access window 17 or by other means well known to those skilled in the art. Once the plug of VR 50 is installed, the adapter 24 of the cable 20 is released from the plug of VR 50 and the pressure on the tool shank 13 is released to raise the tool shank 13 back up (or the tool shank 13). tool 13 is lifted up manually) and accordingly pull cable 20 back into tubular housing 16. Pressure from lubricator 12 can be vented, again in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. Tool 10 can then be discontinued from valve V1.
To extract the plug from VR 50, tool 10 is again lowered into cellar C and is connected to valve V1 by adapter flange 18 and screws 25. Tool rod 13 is driven downwards by actuating piston 40 or manually , thus driving cable 20 through valves V1 and V2 until adapter 24 connects to VR plug 50. The wellhead pressure is determined by means well known to those skilled in the art, and the pressure in lubricator 12 is again equalized to the wellhead pressure on the VR 50 plug. This ensures that once the VR 50 plug is disconnected from the wellhead, the wellhead pressure does not send the VR 50 plug shooting out. Tool shank 13 of lubricator 12 is turned counterclockwise to unscrew VR plug 50 from wellhead W. Tool shank 13 is then retracted by releasing pressure on piston 40° by manually retracting it. Tool shank retraction 13 pulls cable 20 and VR plug 50 out of valves/wellhead. Once the VR 50 plug is fully retracted, valves V1 and V2 are closed. Pressure in lubricator 12 can be released and adapter flange 18 can then be disconnected from valve V1.
It will be recognized by the person skilled in the art that the mechanism for connecting and releasing the adapter 24 to and from the VR plug 50 may vary. For example, the VR plug may have left-hand threads on the end that plugs into the adapter and right-hand threads on the end to plug into the wellhead. In each case, the VR plug is threaded into the adapter. During installation, clockwise rotation of cable 20 threads the VR plug to the wellhead. Once the VR Plug is fully in place, further clockwise rotation of Cable 20 unscrews the Adapter 24 from the VR Plug 50. Likewise, when extracting the VR Plug, counterclockwise rotation will thread the adapter 24 to the VR 50 plug and once connected, further counterclockwise rotation will unthread the VR 50 plug from the wellhead. This is simply a method of connecting and releasing the adapter 24 from the VR plug 50. There are other means of loosely connecting the adapter 24 to the VR plug 50 that are well known to those skilled in the art.
Além da direção da trança do fio e, assim, a direção permitida de rotação, todas as demais características seriam iguais entre as versões canhotas e destras da ferramenta 10.[021] It will also be recognized by the person skilled in the art that, depending on the type of wire used in the tool, it may be necessary to have two versions of the tool 10, namely, a left-handed version and a right-handed version. Steel cables are usually formed from smaller braided or twisted wires. These braided strands can only be rotated in one direction, as rotating in the opposite direction would untangle or distort the strands. Apart from the direction of the wire braid and thus the permissible direction of rotation, all other characteristics would be the same between left and right handed versions of tool 10.
Nesse caso, um única versão da ferramenta 10 poderia realizar a instalação e extração de um plugue de VR.[022] Alternatively, the cable 20 would be formed from an anti-twisting steel cable or coated with a flexible coating that prevents separation of the strands. In this case, a single tool version 10 could perform the installation and extraction of a VR plug.
The present invention provides several advantages over the prior art. it allows installation of VR plugs in narrow cellars or other hard-to-reach areas. It eliminates the need to dig trenches and workspaces in cellars, thus saving time and money. Workers can operate the tool from ground level. Therefore, it provides safety by allowing workers to operate at a distance from the valves.
