Description

“WATER HERBICIDIC INTERMIXTURES.

Field of the Invention Technique [001] The invention relates to herbicidal intermixtures. More particularly, the invention relates to homogeneous, essentially aqueous, herbicidal compositions comprising electrolytic herbicides and a multi-part amine component.

Background of the invention [002] The control of unwanted plants is of high importance in agriculture. Over the years, several strategies have been developed for the effective control of these unwanted plants. Depending on the region, it is necessary to find or develop appropriate techniques for the desired weed control. A large part of the world's surface is arid, characterized as too dry for conventional rain-fed agriculture and therefore requires precise or specific weed control techniques.

[003] “Arid implies prolonged drought and is used in relation to the climate and the land below it. In such regions, the capacity to produce agricultural crops is restricted. Usually, in arid lands, the potential evaporation of water from the land exceeds rainfall. The land can be characterized according to the degree of dryness as dry forest, chaparral or savanna, meadow or savanna or desert. “Arid does not adequately characterize soils, however, as they can vary in many ways. They are often alkaline or saline.

[004] An arid ecosystem differs in many ways from one of tropical or temperate zones.

Unlike temperate zones, an arid zone is characterized as an area of low precipitation, high temperature and high evaporation rate. The frequency of rainfall does not accurately describe the type of arid zone, nor does the amount of precipitation control the type of vegetation.

[005] Among the various agronomic practices that could cause immediate positive results in arid and rainfed areas, the ideal and effective weed control is the first and main management practice. However, many weeds that grow naturally in the arid region have developed a more complicated general drought adaptation strategy that usually involves several mechanisms of escape, tolerance and drought prevention. The option of falling leaves, tight stomatal control and the development of a prolific root system are all specific characteristics developed by vegetation intended to grow in arid regions. Plants adopt osmoregulation and an increase in cell elasticity and a decrease in cell size. Due to such natural adaptation of plants / weeds to specific conditions, they are more resistant than those that grow under normal conditions and are more difficult to control. In addition, such weeds have thick, waxy cuticle layers defending them from penetrating any use of foliar herbicides. It was observed that the commonly used non-selective herbicides, such as glufosinate-based formulations, were not providing effective weed control in arid regions.

[006] Glufosinate is an application type herbicide

3/26 in non-selective foliage that exterminates or controls many weed species. In Pesticide Manual, 15th Edition, glufosinate was described as being widely used in burn segments and to control a wide range of sedges and grasses and herbs weed with broad leaves in cereals, cotton, corn and soybeans, fruit orchards, vineyards , oil palm and rubber plantations, ornamental trees and shrubs, non-cultivated land and pre-emergence in vegetables.

[007] Glufosinate, which is a contact herbicide, is known to be used with various adjuvants to improve effectiveness or induce certain specific properties as required. Document No. US6642177 reveals that, to be effective, glufosinate must be formulated with a high concentration of surfactants to achieve the required bioeffectiveness.

[008] Document No. DE 3931051 discloses salts of herbicidal acids with long-chain nitrogen bases, such as fatty amines.

[009] It has been observed by the inventors of the present invention that existing formulations of the non-selective herbicide, such as glufosinate, are not effective as desired particularly in arid environments. In view of such an observation, there is a need to develop more effective formulations that are physically stable as well as bioeffective regardless of the environment, such as arid or non-arid regions.

[010] Taking the above into account, the primary objective of the present invention is the design and preparation of an innovative composition of glufosinate that is highly

4/26 effective particularly in arid regions where weeds have thick, waxy leaves and are difficult to penetrate with usual leaf herbicide formulations.

Objectives of the invention [011] It is an object of the present invention to provide an aqueous herbicidal formulation comprising glufosinate and a multi-part amine component.

[012] It is another object of the present invention to provide an aqueous herbicidal formulation comprising glufosinate and a multi-part amine component for effective weed control in arid regions.

[013] It is an object of the present invention to provide a process or preparation of an aqueous herbicidal formulation comprising glufosinate and a multi-part amine component.

[014] Yet another objective of the present invention is to provide a method for controlling unwanted plants in arid regions.

Summary of the invention [015] The present invention provides a herbicidal intermixture comprising:

a) an electrolytic herbicide; and

b) a multi-part amine component.

[016] The present invention provides a herbicidal intermixture comprising:

a) an electrolytic herbicide;

b) a multi-part amine component; and

c) water.

[017] The present invention additionally provides a herbicidal intermixture comprising:

a) a phosphonic acid herbicide, its salts, its isomers, mixtures of isomers, derivatives or lower alkyl esters thereof;

b) a multi-part amine component;

c) optionally other agrochemical excipients; and

[018] In another aspect, the present invention provides an aqueous herbicidal composition comprising:

(a) a phosphonic acid herbicide, its salts, its isomers, mixtures of isomers, derivatives or lower alkyl esters thereof;

(b) a multi-part amine component;

(c) one or more organic solvents;

(d) optionally, one or more adjuvants; and (e) water, wherein said multi-part amine component comprises at least one tertiary amine having an alkyl group of at least 8 carbon atoms.

[019] In another aspect of the present invention, a process is provided for preparing an herbicidal intermixture according to the present invention.

[020] Another aspect of the present invention is to provide a method for controlling unwanted plants in areas of culture and non-culture, wherein said method is characterized by the fact that it comprises applying to plants, unwanted plants or their location, an effective amount as Intermediate herbicide herbicide according to the present invention.

Detailed description [022] It has been found that highly effective herbicidal compositions comprising glufosinate can be developed by mixing glufosinate with multi-part amine components. In order to overcome the inefficiencies of existing formulations particularly in arid regions, the inventors of the present invention have surprisingly found that the herbicidal intermixture of glufosinate with multi-part amine components can be used effectively.

[023] Thus, according to one aspect of the present invention, an herbicidal intermix is provided which comprises:

a) an electrolytic herbicide; and

b) a multi-part amine component.

[024] In one embodiment, the intermix comprises water.

[025] The present invention thus provides an herbicidal intermixture comprising:

a) an electrolytic herbicide;

b) a multi-part amine component; and

c) water.

In another embodiment, the intermixture of the present invention has superior herbicidal activity.

[029] Consequently, in certain other modalities, an herbicidal mixture is provided which comprises:

a) an electrolytic herbicide; and

b) a multi-part amine component.

The required amounts of multi-part amine components, wetting agent, organic solvent, ammonium sulfate and water were combined and mixed until a homogeneous mixture was obtained. 23/26 [084] Field tests were carried out in arid regions with the use of herbicidal intermixtures comprising glufosinate prepared according to the present invention as the broad spectrum herbicide in arid regions. Two comparative compositions were prepared (in the absence of the multi-part amine component) and tested together with the inventive compositions to verify bio-efficacy. [085] The compositions were diluted in water and applied to broadleaf weeds, grasses and sedges in the arid region.

After treatment using the composition (Example 14) prepared in accordance with the present invention, chlorosis followed by weed necrosis was observed demonstrating the bioeffectiveness of the new compositions. Comparative compositions (Example 15 and Example 16) and the market sample of glufosinate ammonium (glufosinate ammonium Liberty 280 SL) were also tested to compare the results. Observations at 7 days, 14 days and 21 days after application were summarized in the table below (Table 1).

[086] The results of the field test as shown in the table above clearly reveal that the compositions according to the present invention are extremely effective for weed control in arid region. It was observed that, due to the natural adaptation of weeds to arid conditions, they are more resistant than those that grow under normal conditions and were more difficult to control. In addition, these weeds exhibited thick, waxy cuticle layers, defending them from the penetration of herbicide spray. It was observed that the commonly used glufosinate-based formulations and the glufosinate market sample were not providing effective weed control in arid regions. Inventive compositions, even at low

Aqueous herbicidal composition according to claim 5, characterized in that said multi-part amine component comprises at least two tertiary dimethyl alkylamines having alkyl groups of 8 to 20 carbon atoms in which at least one dimethyl alkylamine it is present in at least an amount of about 50% by weight of the multi-part amine component.
