The present invention relates to an improved process for producing high purity 3-dimethylaminopropylamine from N, N-dimethylaminopropionitrile using a low pressure hydrogenation process. The basic process comprises contacting nitrile with hydrogen at low pressure in the presence of a catalyst under conditions sufficient to effect conversion of nitrile to the primary amine product.
