The composition comprises base material having unexpanded perlite grains of a selected particle size distribution that undergoes grain fracturing as a function of the nonabrasive force applied to the base material. The selected particle size distribution includes a significant volume of unexpanded perlite ore grains having an average particle size (d ~ 90 ~) within a range of about 101 gm to about 229 µm. The base material is responsive to an abrasive force being applied to it during polishing resulting in continued fracturing of the unexpanded perlite grains to give a final polishing composition having a sufficiently low level of abrasiveness under said abrasive force making it suitable. for use in polishing. Also shown are polishing compositions for acrylic dentures and CRT tube surfaces using the unexpanded perlite ore polishing composition and methods for polishing them.
