A communication session over the digital network is controlled by an interface connected to the facsimile machine, the communication session control method comprising the steps of: receiving a plurality of signals from the facsimile machine; converting a predetermined subset of the plurality of signals into a plurality of digital signals; and communicating with a remote station using the plurality of digital signals, wherein the remote station is connected to a destination facsimile machine. To prevent call interruption, the interface decreases the transmission rate of facsimile data from the sending facsimile below the actual data rate capacity of the network and the receiving facsimile machine. In addition, the interface delays the transmission of facsimile data from the transmitting facsimile machine by sending Failure To Train messages during sending.
