Particularly preferred are non-hydratable inorganic coating materials including combinations of double salts of alkali metal carbonates and sulfates. The particle coating layer may further include adjunct detergent ingredients such as brighteners, chelators, nonionic surfactants, co-builder etc. The process includes the steps of passing the core particle through a coating mixer such as a low speed mixer or a fluid bed mixer and coating the core particle with a coating solution or slurry of the water-soluble inorganic material. After drying, the resulting detergent particles have improved appearance and flow properties and can be packaged and sold as a detergent material or mixed with various other detergent ingredients to provide a fully formulated detergent composition.
