The method comprises carrying out one-stage sulphuric acid reduction of alkaline bichromate with molasses at a temperature of 100-115 degrees C. To lend a masking effect, sodium phthalate or sodium sulphite can be added to the reaction mixture in the form of aqueous solution at a temperature of 60-100 degrees C. The resulting base or masking tanning agent is finally dried by a pulverization method.
