Abstract

The copolymers of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) have potential uses in enzymologic engineering as carriers for immobilizing enzymes and cells. They are prepared using a method, which increases the extent and efficiency of grafting without using an inert gas. The method involves generating active sites by a photochemical or irradiation route. The photo-chemically activated PAN fibres are boiled for 1-2 hours in 0.45-0.60 % solution of benzophenone in acetone. After drying, the fibres are exposed to an UV light source with power rating between 44 and 125 W. When radio-chemically activated, the PAN fibres are wetted in glycidilmethacrylate (GM) or solutions of the same, followed by irradiation with γ rays at 2.5 Mrad. The photochemical grafting of GM and 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (2-XEMA) is achieved by dispersing PAN fibres in a mixture containing GM (GM and 2-XEMA), methylethylketone, water, iron sulphate and, in some cases, dimethylformamide. The duration of the graft copolymerisation is 3-4 hours at 70-75 degrees C. The ungraft homopolymer is separated by washing the modified PAN fibres with acetone, while the graft copolymer is vacuum-dried at 40 degrees C.
