Abstract

A trap for bee parasites consists of an area of the hive prepared to receive the brood comb having at least a part of its surface bearing an attractant for the parasites. A honeycomb structure is introduced into drone cells in a beehive, the structure being coated with a attractant on at least one face. When the cells have been operculated they are removed, thus eliminating the parasites.

Description

"METHOD AND DEVICE FOR TRAPPING BEE PARASITES, AND SUBSTANCES FOR THIS METHOD AND THE DEVICE"

Method and device for trapping bee parasites, and substances intended for this method and this device.

The present invention relates to a method and a device for trapping bee parasites as well as substances intended for the implementation of this method and of this device.

The invention thus provides an effective means of combating parasites of bees, such as in particular the mite Varroa Jacobsoni. Bee Varroasis is a well-known parasitic disease

and described in detail in the publication entitled "La Varroase

bees, guidelines for practice "published by the Ministry

of Agriculture, Information Service, avenue du Boulevard, 21

at 1000 Brussels (ed. March 1985), the content of which is reproduced here

by reference.

A new method of trapping bee parasites has now been found which gives far superior results.

to those described in the publication referred to above.

It was thus noted that certain substances whose attraction for the mites parasites was known per se, and which had moreover been proposed like means of trapping of these mites

by some researchers, have quite surprising effectiveness when applied directly to an inner portion of the hive.

It has also been unexpectedly found that this surprising effectiveness is still greatly amplified by a synergetic effect when combined with the effect resulting from the marked preference.

by Varroa Jacobsoni for the drone brood.

It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a trap for bee parasites as defined in claims 1 to 6 which follow this description.

Yet another object of the invention is to provide a method

to trap bee parasites and control certain

of these parasites as defined in claims 7 to 9 which follow the present description.

Another object of the invention is finally to provide substances which can be used in the methods and devices according to the invention, which substances correspond to the characteristics defined in claims 10 to 15 which follow the present description.

The invention is illustrated by the description of comparative experiments between the quantity of parasites found in portions

hive not treated according to the invention and portions treated according to the invention.

A queen has been brought to lay her eggs on untreated "female" frames, on untreated "male" frames and on "sprayed" "male" frames using a composition based on glucose, substitute for pollen, thyme essential oil, cellulosic components of leaves and molasses in approximately equivalent quantities.

It was found that the catch of Varroas in the treated “male” frames was approximately 7 to 10 times greater compared to the control of untreated “female” frames and about 25% greater compared to the untreated “male” frames. .

It is understood that the invention is in no way limited by the particular embodiments described in this specification and that many modifications will appear to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention, as described to the following claims. It goes without saying that the invention is in no way limited to the use of certain specific substances which are attractive to parasites.

Any substance currently known or which can be discovered later and having such properties is of course within the scope of the present invention.
