Description

On fabrique également

Process for the production of covering elements.

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of covering elements, such as and in particular trim elements for decorating automobile interiors, for example dashboards. Although thanks to the process in question, it is possible to produce elements of any configuration, it is particularly advantageous for manufacturing elements of complex shape, for example having curved parts or folds.

It is already known to cover surfaces by coating them by bonding, either with sheets of wood, or with plastic films, or with thin metal sheets, the support to be coated possibly being any, but often made of sheet steel; classic applications include manufacturing

office furniture, elevator shafts, decoration panels for household appliances or vehicles.

When the covering material is plastic, there is generally no great difficulty in carrying out the forming (particularly the folding, including at right angles) of the support / covering assembly secured for example by

<EMI ID = 1.1> The problem is different when we want, for reasons of comfort or aesthetics, to cover a support with a sheet of wood which, we see, on the one hand, does not support without damage the forming operation, and on the other hand, is very fragile to external stresses, such as shocks, claws, etc ... especially if the shape of the coated part causes significant stresses in the coating.

The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing covering elements, consisting of a sheet of wood applied to a support and resistant to external aggressions.

The process, object of the present invention, in which a sheet of wood is applied by gluing to a rigid support, possibly before the support is shaped, is essentially characterized in that, before gluing, the wood sheet is treated by immersing it in a water bath at a temperature above 90 [deg.] C and in that, after bonding and drying of the wood sheet, it is coated with a protective layer, for example polyurethane varnish

or polyester.

In an advantageous variant of implementation of the process of the invention, especially applicable when the whole of the support and of the wood sheet must be shaped, for example folded, after gluing, the veneered wood is prepared in immersing beforehand in a water bath brought to a temperature between 60 [deg.] C and 90 [deg.] C and, preferably, between 70 [deg.] C and 80 [deg.] C, after which We proceed

when formatting the element.

The present invention is applicable whatever the support, metallic or plastic; to produce elements such as automobile interior trim, it is advantageous to use aluminum sheets

<EMI ID = 2.1> Furthermore, the applied material, in this case the wood sheet, can possibly be deposited in several layers; according to the invention, the thickness of a sheet intended for bonding and optionally for forming, is preferably between 0.6 mm and 1.5 mm.

According to the invention, it is advantageous to use for the assembly, a one-component polyurethane adhesive.

The bonding operation which the process of the invention entails can be carried out very simply when the surfaces present, that is to say the support and the sheet of wood, are flat; when the paste operation

takes place while the support is already shaped, it is preferable to operate using a gauge and a counter-gauge to ensure the perfect application of the two components of the element.

Of course, the method of the invention also includes other operations, conventional ones and well known to those skilled in the art, such as the production of preliminary templates, for example of strong paper, the cutting of the supports ( before or after gluing the sheet of wood), the folding of the elements, possibly the welding of parts together, the preparation of the surface of the support intended to receive the glue, the flushing of the formed elements, the sanding of the parts and the surface preparation before applying the protective layer, etc ...

The process of the invention makes it possible to easily manufacture elements of trim which are both decorative, attractive and resistant; such elements are particularly suitable for covering automobile interiors where they replace, or cover, parts such as dashboards, door trim parts, di-verse housings, etc., even when necessary to confer,

to these elements, complex shapes to match the surfaces to be covered.

As an example of implementation of the method of the invention, mention will be made of a dashboard of an existing production car.

After having made a solid wood caliber, reproduction of the dashboard element it represents, which will be used to glue a sheet of wood 0.8 mm thick on an aluminum sheet of 1 mm thick, a template is made of strong paper, then aluminum, intended for tracing the aluminum part. We also manufacture

a counter-gauge, for example also in solid wood, intended to allow the perfect application, one against the other, of the materials to be bonded.

The aluminum sheets are cut, taking into account the configuration of the part to be produced: flat part or part

to fold, with or without internal or external cutting, more or less complex. The sheets, once cut, are, if necessary, folded to size, possibly using a folder; for some joints, it may be useful to weld and flush the edges.

Before bonding, the surface of the sheet is prepared by brushing and degreasing, while the wood sheets, cut according to the appropriate template, are soaked for a few seconds in boiling water, especially at the place of folds if you have to apply

veneer on a previously folded support. We glue the elements together, using for example a one-component polyurethane glue, and we leave

the parts under press for a few hours at a temperature above 10 [deg.] C.

We flush the pieces of wood, preferably when the wood is still wet, even if it means finishing it on dry wood. After sanding of the parts, rectification of surface irregularities and cleaning, the elements are sent to the varnishing where a layer called "sealer" is first deposited, then a finishing layer consisting of a varnish.

We finish the pieces by drilling the holes for the passage of the fixing screws and possibly fixing self-adhesive materials that will allow placement and maintenance in the desired location.

The method of the invention is also applicable when one wishes to glue the veneer directly on the elements to be covered, without passing through the aluminum support; some of the operations described above are naturally to be adapted to this particular modality of implementation
