<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a combination of animal food, such as fodder, and an antiseptic, which is intended to serve as an antiseptic means of protection and therapy of the gastrointestinal tract and at the same time has an ergotropic action and which will be used in animal production on an industrial scale to prevent infectious diseases of the stomach and intestine, as well as infections of other localizations, in particular pneumonia, which can result directly or indirectly from these diseases. Foods of common and usual kind are used for this purpose which, in accordance with the present invention, are combined with antiseptic agents of the halogenated alkyl benzyl phenols type.
Young animals, as is known, are generally, but particularly when weaned early or premature, particularly prone to attack by pathogens. From this result considerable losses by death as well as by diseases, individual or group, of whole batches of animals, diseases whose evolution is more or less serious. In this case, the presence, in parts of the body, in particular in the gastrointestinal tract, of a local flora adapted qualitatively to the animal (eubiosis) plays an essential protective role for the health of the organism attacked. .
To this is added the influence exerted as a whole on the growth and development of animals (enhanced increase in body mass) by a physiological composition of the different episomatic biotopes. In animal production or farming on an industrial scale, the diarrhea of weaned piglets, for example, causes a slowdown in growth, i.e. an increase in body mass, and a profit insufficient food, and it requires relatively high processing costs as well as animal testing. The most common method currently used when diarrhea occurs is through drastic chemotherapy.
As is known, a protective administration of chemotherapeutic agents, in particular antibiotics, has considerable drawbacks, apart from the fact that it is not physiological and that it is expensive. In this respect, it can for example be said that the development of resistance to chemotherapeutic agents is favored,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
that there is a migration of pathogens under the effect of the selective pressure of chemotherapy, that there are systemic side effects in animals, disadvantages to which is added that of the problematic nature of resistance.
The avoidance of the appearance of diseases, on the one hand, and the optimal progress of the digestion processes under the protection of a flora of the episomatic biotopes advantageous to the organism which can be reached, by suitable antiseptic measures, on the other hand, lead not only to an improvement in the state of health, but also to a better growth or increase in the mass of the body, without presenting the disadvantages mentioned above of the use of chemotherapeutic agents.
The object of the present invention is to provide an antiseptic means of protection and therapy of the gastrointestinal tract which makes it possible to prevent and treat infectious diarrheal conditions using a combination of animal food, such as fodder, and an antiseptic, by means of which it can be obtained, for minimal systemic and local toxicity, a protective and, at the same time, ergotropic protective and therapeutic effect.
At the same time it will be obtained a prevention of infectious diseases of other localizations, in particular pneumonia, which are directly or indirectly a function of the optimal composition of the episomatic biotopes, as well as a prevention of the effects of these diseases, for example of the need for chemotherapy, stunted growth or increased body mass and loss of animals.
The present invention aims to provide, by the combination of halogenated alkylbenzyl phenols with antiseptic action to foods of common and usual kind, a medicinal animal feed which has a protective and therapeutic effect, as well as an effect ergotropic, just as it aims to avoid the use of chemotherapeutic agents for such purposes. It has been found that foods of the common and usual kind, with halogenated alkyl benzyl phenols, isolated or in combination, have a remarkable protective and therapeutic effect, as well as an ergotropic effect.
By the use of this medicinal food for animals, in particular in the conditions of breeding on an industrial scale, the growth of the animals is favored in a very sensitive measure, the appearance of infectious diseases of other localizations
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
which may result from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract is largely avoided or the course of the diseases is greatly alleviated, just as animal losses are reduced to a considerable extent. At the same time, the development of body mass or growth is clearly promoted.
An additional advantage offered by the use of the medicinal animal feed which is the subject of the present invention resides in that when the administration of this feed has been interrupted, the ergotropic effect and the good growth of the animals will hold for a relatively long time.
The present invention will be further explained here in more detail by referring to embodiments thereof which will be described below.
Example of embodiment 1 500 ml of 2-chloro-6-methyl-4-benzyl-phenol (CMB) are dissolved in 2 l of 96% ethanol. The solution thus obtained is gradually distributed, uniformly, in 20 kg of animal feed, by spraying it there and stirring the mixture constantly. This first mixture is then supplemented with another quantity of animal food, to which it is thoroughly mixed, to form 1 t of animal food.
Example of embodiment 2 162 weaned piglets (experimental group) received the medicinal animal feed which is the subject of the present invention, the administration of this feed having started immediately after weaning and having continued for 21 days. At the same time, a control group of 324 animals was maintained in the same pigsty and under identical conditions, who received the same feed to which the CMB agent which is the subject of the present invention had not been added. All the results had to be assessed in relation to the control group and in relation to the veterinary and zootechnical experiences of many years which had been carried out in this animal production or breeding facility on an industrial scale.
As the most important criterion, it was noted that the diarrheal morbidity in the experimental group was significantly lower than in the control animals (see table given below). In the case of the experimental group, no administration of chemotherapeutic agents was necessary, while all the animals in the control group lasted
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
be administered chemotherapeutic agents on the 10th, 11th and 12th day of breeding, as has been the rule in this facility for years. In the case of the experimental group, the daily increase in body mass was 58% greater than in the case of the control group.
After cessation of administration of the animal feed, the experimental animals also developed significantly better than the animals in the control group. This applies to the increase in body mass or growth and to the general clinical condition.
Carrying out example 3 To 40 weaned piglets in which strong diarrheal affections had appeared on the 10th day after weaning, the animal feed which had been prepared according to the indications given in embodiment 1 was administered for 14 days above, and the diarrhea was completely dominated on the 3rd day.
Example 4 In the same way as in the case of the example 1 and in the case of the example 2 which were given above, favorable results were obtained using the agents indicated above. after:
