compound is the subject of patent application of the United States of America n [deg.] 260,849 by JW Bolger of June 8, 1972 and corresponding German and French patents applied for in 1973. In addition, the Indian patent n [deg .] 129.187 of November 12, 1970 of

chroman and related compounds. The procedure was described later by Ray and Collaborators in J. Med. Chem. 19 (2). 276-279 (1976).
According to Indian patent n [deg.] 129.187, the process for
<EMI ID = 5.1>
phenyl-7-methoxychroman comprises the reaction of a compound of
formula:
<EMI ID = 6.1>
where R represents a lower alkyl radical and R 'and R "may each be a hydroxy radical; chloro, fluoro, trifluoromethyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or tertiary lower aminolkoxy,
<EMI ID = 7.1>
presence of an acid acceptor agent for the formation of the compound of formula:
<EMI ID = 8.1>
where R, R 'and R "have the above meanings and, if desired, isomerization of the resulting compound by means of a strong base in an aprotic solvent into a compound of formula:
<EMI ID = 9.1>
where R, R 'and R "have the above meanings.
At the start of Indian patent n ° 129,187, the Applicant carried out additional research which gave interesting results. The contraceptive power of
<EMI ID = 10.1> phenyl-7-methoxychroman was known. Therefore, the fact that one of the two isomeric forms of this compound manifests
an effect twice as powerful as a post-coital anti-conception agent in women is both unexpected and advantageous. The Applicant has indeed discovered that the resolution of the racemic compound known in the isomeric forms
<EMI ID = 11.1>

For the purposes of the invention, "lower alkyl" and "lower alkoxy" radicals are understood to mean the straight and branched chain alkyl and alkoxy radicals, respectively, having 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Examples of "lower alkyl" radicals are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, t-butyl, n-amyl, s-amyl, n-hexyl, 2-ethylbutyl and 2,3-dimethylbutyl radicals , while examples of "lower alkoxy" radicals are methoxy, ethoxy, n-propoxy, isopropoxy, n-butyoxy, t-butoxy, n-amyloxy, s-amyloxy, n-hexyloxy, 2-ethylbutyoxy and 2 radicals, 3-dimethylbutoxy.
The tertiary amino radicals are dialkylamine radicals, such as dimethylamine, diethylamine, dipropylamine or dibutylamine radicals or else radicals of
<EMI ID = 18.1>
pyrrolidine, N-methylpiperazine or morpholine.
Preferably, R is a lower alkyl radical, R 'is a hydrogen atom, R "occupies position 4 and is
<EMI ID = 19.1>
lower alkoxy and R "occupies position 7 and is a lower alkoxy radical.
