<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>

The present invention relates to a device for
the manufacture of expanded cereal pancakes, in particular of
rice, very robust and very reliable in terms of
concerns the dimensions of the wafers obtained.
It is known to make rice cakes using
a mold consisting of a punch and a die, putting in
implements a process comprising the following steps:
- deposit of a predetermined quantity of rice on the punch
- closing of the mold by engagement of the punch carrying the rice in the matrix
- compression of the rice by the punch against the heated bottom of the die
- rice expansion by a limited and brutal withdrawal of the punch to a predetermined position where it continues to cooperate with the die to keep the rice in expansion in the mold
- opening of the mold by releasing the punch from the die.
In this process, the most important step towards
the constitution of the rice cake is expansion, which must
be as quick as possible to get a quality patty. In addition, the withdrawal of the punch, limited to a position in
which it continues to cooperate with the matrix to prevent any
rice leaking out of the mold during expansion, must remain
as invariable as possible during successive manufacturing, to guarantee a constant thickness for the patties produced,
as well as to guarantee the tightness of the mold to the expanding rice.
To date, various devices have been proposed for the implementation
work of this orocédé, all of which use a moving, animated punch
<EMI ID = 1.1>
intermediate by a movable stop to determine the position of the
punch in the matrix corresponding to the expansion of the wafer,
the movement of the punch away from the die then being
continued with a view to opening the mold.
This is how it has long been known to order
<EMI ID = 2.1>
tituant abutment for the punch guiding member during the abrupt withdrawal of the latter during the rice expansion phase. The
subsequent rotation of the cam causes the erasure of the part of the profile constituting the stop and commands an additional withdrawal of the punch to open the mold.
Repeated shocks of the punch guide member on the cam cause deterioration and rapid wear of the cam and the guide member, causing variations in
the position of the punch in the mold during the expansion phase of the cake.
It has also already been proposed, in Belgian patent n [deg.]
868 361, to replace the cam with a jack and a stop capable of temporarily stopping the reciprocating movement of the punch in the position corresponding to the phase of expansion of the wafer. Given that the stopping of the punch must be carried out temporarily in an intermediate position, this device necessarily includes a retractable stop, that is to say mobile, whose members? of connection to a chassis or fixed support (articulations, slides or others), are subjected to stresses leading to rapid wear of the members for connecting the stop to the chassis,
and therefore variations in the position of the stop during successive manufacturing, also causing variations in the position of the punch in the mold during the expansion phase of the wafer.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks by providing a device for the production of cereal pancakes, in particular rice, in which the stopping of the punch in the expansion position of the pancake is carried out reliably in a position invariable.
This object is achieved according to the invention by providing a device for the manufacture of wafers of expanded cereals, in particular rice, which comprises in this known manner a mold consisting of a punch and a matrix provided with a heating means,
a means for actuating the punch in a reciprocating movement towards and away from the die, a stop to stop the stroke of the punch in its movement away from the die, in a position where the mold n is not yet open, device in which the stop is a fixed stop, and the matrix is movable in <EMI ID = 3.1> in elevation and partially in section three different embodiments of the device according to the invention.
In these various embodiments, the same elements are designated by the same reference numbers.
Thus, in the three embodiments shown, the device comprises a frame 1, formed of end supports 2, 3 connected together by tie rods 4. Between the supports, and parallel to these, are fixed retaining plates 5, 6 of guide members 7, 8, as well as a plate 9 constituting a fixed stop.
The plate 5 is integral with the guide member 7, tra-

secured at its upper end with a punch 13.
The matrix 11 and the punch 13 constitute the two

For the sake of clarity of the description which follows, it is advisable to deny defining the various relative positions occupied
<EMI ID = 6.1> mite is provided with a roller 17 moving on the support 2.
The pivoting of the arm 16 around the articulation 15 is controlled by a pneumatic cylinder 18 of low power, integral with the frame 1, until it comes to occupy a locking position against a stop 19, locking position located slightly beyond the point of intersection of the axis of the mold elements with the support 2.
A return spring 20 is compressed between the plate 5 and a shoulder 21 at the upper end of the rod 10.
The rod 12 is integral with the actuating member of a pneumatic cylinder 22 of high power and short stroke, this cylinder being also integral with a connecting rod 23 connected by an articulation 24 to an arm 25 provided with its other end of a caster 26. The pivoting of the arm 25 is controlled by a pneumatic cylinder 27 of low power, and the caster 26 thus rolls on the support 3 until it comes to occupy a locking position against a stop 28, position lock located

The device is arranged so that the pivoting of the arm

a stroke corresponding to the distance separating the positions of rice expansion and equalization of fresh rice. These two movements are accomplished by implementing reduced forces, without requiring any compression work, and bring the actuating devices into the locking position. It is then possible to use the pneumatic cylinder of high power
22 on the short stroke separating the equalization positions of the fresh rice and the compression of the rice. The expansion of the rice is obtained very suddenly by releasing the pressure in the jack 22 and simultaneously by bringing the arm 25 back below its locked position. presented in FIG. 2, the actuating rod 10 of the matrix 11 is integral with the rod 29 of a low-power pneumatic cylinder 30. The matrix is also integral with a plate 31. The latter cooperates with members retractable locking devices 32, 32 'controlled by electromagnets 33, 33', and with the retaining plate 5, to ensure the locking of the matrix in the lowered position.
Furthermore, the actuating member of the pneumatic cylinder 22 of high power and short stroke is integral. as in the embodiment of FIG. 1, of the rod 12 for actuating the punch 11. This jack 22 is on the other hand integral with a drum 34 of a drum brake 35. This drum, in the lowered position of the cylinder 22-punch assembly 3, comes into contact with the stop plate 9 and constitutes the projecting member cooperating with the stop plate to stop the fall of the punch.
The rise of the drum 34, and of the cylinder 22-punch assembly 13 of which it is integral, is ensured by a pneumatic cylinder.
<EMI ID = 12.1>
The low power cylinders 30 and 36 are located on the axis of the mold elements.
The operation of this device is as follows. The die 11 and the plate 31 are lowered from the open position

shown in the drawing). The locking elements 32, 32 'are then brought from the retracted position, shown in dotted lines, to the engaged position shown in solid lines, under the action of the electromagnets 33, 33', and thus ensure the locking of the matrix. in the lowered position.
The "erin 36 raises the drum as well as the cylinder-punch assembly of which it is integral over a distance corresponding to the stroke of the punch between the positions of expansion of the rice and equalization of the fresh rice. When the punch 13 reaches its upper position, corresponding to the rice equalization position, the drum brake 35 is actuated to lock the cylinder 22-punch assembly 13 in this position. The die 11 and the drum 34 being locked, the cylinder 22 is actuated to to bring
the punch in the mold in the rice compression position.
During the rice expansion phase, the die 11 is kept in the locked position, while the jack 22 is deactivated and the brake \ drum 35 is suddenly unlocked. The drum 34 then falls back into contact with the fixed stop 9, and the

Finally, if we refer to the embodiment of Figure 3, the movements of the matrix 11 are controlled via the rod 10, directly by a hydraulic cylinder <EMI ID = 15.1>
in the embodiment of Figure 1, by means of a rod 12 and a connecting member 23 terminated by an articulation

tion 24 and moving con other end by means of a roller 26, on the support 3, to a locking position against a stop 28. The locking position is located somewhat beyond the intersection of the axis of the mold elements with said support.
The displacements of the sorter 25 towards the position of illage lock are obtained by the action of an electromagnet 38, while the displacements of the arm 25 away from the position of ver-

lowering of the punch 13, while the actuation of the arm 25 to its locking position causes the punch to move over a distance corresponding to the travel between the positions of compression of the rice and expansion of the rice.
The matrix 11 is driven by the hydraulic cylinder 37 over a distance corresponding to the sum of the stroke between the position of opening the mold and closing the mold in the position of expansion of the rice and the stroke between the positions of equalization rice and rice compression.
The expansion of the rice is ensured by the unlocking of the arm 25 under the action of the electromagnet 38 'and the sudden fall

high position, corresponding to the closing of the grinding wheel in the rice compression position and a low position corresponding to the closing of the mold in the rice expansion position, the low position of the punch being determined by cooperation of an organ
protruding with a fixed stop.
In addition, when using pneumatic cylinders, the fact of separating the motor means into actuating members
of low power, affecting the entire course of the elements
of the mold that does not require the application of pressure, and as a high-power pressure member, acting only on the travel between the positions of equalization of the rice and compression of the rice, allows great savings to be made in compressed air.
The invention has been described and illustrated simply by way of nonlimiting example, and it goes without saying that numerous modifications can be made to its production without departing from its spirit.
