The present invention relates to fittings as well as to the method of mounting and fixing these fittings on flexible metal pipes, in particular on annularly corrugated pipes.
Up to now the planned connections
for this kind of pipes are mounted on the end of the pipe by welding. For difficult and critical applications this welding is carried out with silver. We can easily see that
the cost price for making such assemblies is quite high, both from a material point of view
(silver welding) only from the point of view of skilled labor.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks and proposes a connector, the assembly of which is simple and effective.
In order to achieve this goal,
the connector for metallic flexible pipes essentially comprises at least two half-shells whose inner circumference is shaped so
to match the peripheral corrugations of the flexible hose and whose outside diameter corresponds
to the bore of the fitting to be fitted.
An important feature of the process of the invention is that the half shells are crimped onto the flexible pipe by the connecting piece itself.
In order to complete the sealing of the assembly, it is also possible to provide for the addition of an O-ring as well as the application to the various parts of a sealing aid before the crimping operation.
An exemplary embodiment will be described below with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view showing the various elements of the connector; Figure 2 is a sectional view of the end of a metal flexible pipe provided with a connector according to the invention.
In Figure 1, there is shown the end of a metal flexible pipe 10 formed of annular corrugations 11, as well as a connecting piece
12 with tubular sleeve 13 and an end piece which can be adapted according to the type of connection to be made, for example with a flange 14 for floating nut or with a threaded end piece (not shown).
According to the invention, two half-shells 15 are provided, the inner periphery of which is shaped so as to match the annular undulations 11 of the pipe 10 and the outside diameter of which corresponds to the bore of the tubular sleeve 13 of the connector 12. It is possible to also provide an O-ring 16 which is placed in
one of the hollows in the corrugations 11 of the flexible pipe 10.
The different elements of the fitting
thus formed are mounted on the flexible pipe
10 as follows (Figure 2):
- On the end of the pipe 10 and on the inner and outer periphery of the half-shells 15, a sealing aid 18 of the so-called "hermetic" type (such as Hylomar or Loctite 648) is applied
- in the hollow of the first corrugation we place the O-ring 16 <EMI ID = 1.1> two half-shells 15 by pushing them well into the hollow of the corrugations so that their edges come into contact with each other
and that the outside diameter corresponds to the bore of the sleeve 13 of the fitting 12
- Then the assembly is introduced into the bore of the sleeve 13 of the connector 12 so that the end of the sleeve 13 exceeds the half-shells 15
- The final operation is to crimp the sleeve 13 on the pipe 10 in order to seal the assembly as shown in Figure 2 (reference 17).
Leak tests have shown that the connection thus produced remains tight at room temperature up to a pressure of 3.4 bar.
Positive results have also been obtained in fire resistance tests. With the pipe under pressure, only a very small leak was observed at the connection from 550 [deg.] C.
It goes without saying that various modifications can be made by those skilled in the art to the device and to the method which have just been described solely by way of nonlimiting example without departing from the scope of the invention.
