<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>

"Composite protective jacket for driving or
The present invention relates to a composite protective casing for a pipe or the like.
Steel pipes used in the basement always require an outer casing or coating to protect them against the mechanical and chemical action of the soil, as well as against electrolysis caused by stray currents. A usual method for ensuring this protection consists in covering with a glass fiber envelope
and bitumen, a pipe during manufacture. However, a protective layer of this type is easily punctured and very often damaged during transport and handling of pipes on site. In addition, only selected materials can be used to sit and cover these pipes. In an attempt to avoid this last mentioned drawback, it was proposed to cover a protective material on pipes before filling the trenches, but it turned out that it was there. a clearly expensive operation.
Similarly, it has been proposed to wrap pipes
coated with bitumen / glass fibers in a spiral protective sheet, but such an operation does not prevent deterioration of the bitumen layer, not to mention that it is expensive when taken into consideration with the process for applying a bitumen coating.
An object of the present invention is to provide, for a pipe or the like, a new protective coating which, as is believed, will provide protection against the mechanical and chemical action of the soil, as well as against a slow penetration of the embankment.
According to the invention, a composite laminate which can be wound around a pipe for protective purposes comprises an outer layer of flexible sheet material relatively resistant to punctures, as well as an inner layer of an adhesive material which can flex elastically, the latter having a thickness sufficient to ensure a damping effect.
Preferably, the outer layer is made
a synthetic resinous material of suitable durability such as a polyethylene-based material or a polyethylene-modified material.
In addition, according to the invention, the adhesive material
is a non-hardening bitumen based on a heat-melting and pressure-sensitive thermoplastic material. The exposed surface
some adhesive can be covered with a protective paper to be peeled off. It will be understood that the material of the inner layer
will be compatible with that of the outer layer.
In addition, according to the invention, the thickness of the inner adhesive layer is greater than that of the layer
<EMI ID = 1.1>
Also preferably, the adhesive layer has a thickness
<EMI ID = 2.1>
It is also understood that the scope of the present invention encompasses a process for covering the exterior surface of a pipe or the like for protective purposes, this process comprising the steps consisting in producing a strip of the laminate of the invention, then wind this strip, generally in a spiral, on the pipe, overlapping the adjacent windings, while the adhesive occupies the extreme internal position.
 In a preferred embodiment, the windings overlap approximately half the width
Of the band.
There are different possibilities for winding this strip on a pipe. In one embodiment,
the pipe can be rotated on its axis by rising, angularly with respect to the latter and near the pipe, a roll of strip material which can move parallel to the axis of the pipe when the strip is unwound over that -this.
In order to illustrate the invention more clearly, we
An embodiment will be described below only by way of example with reference to the appended drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic cross section of a laminate, and Figure 2 is a partial plan view of the laminate of Figure 1 wound on a pipe.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, a laminate intended to be wound on a pipe for protective purposes comprises an outer layer 1 of a flexible synthetic resinous material and an inner layer 2 of an adhesive
bitumen-based, hot-melt, pressure-sensitive, capable of elastic bending and compatible with the material of the outer layer. Also for protection purposes, the exposed surface of the adhesive 2 can be covered with a layer of material to be peeled off 3.
Different materials can be used for the outer layer 1; the only criterion is that
the material must be relatively resistant to punctures, must be resistant to wear and must be able to be used underground. We can consider using a high density polyethylene modified by a rubber consisting of an <EMI ID = 3.1>
0.75 mm. Preferably, the adhesive layer 2 has a thickness of approximately 1.2 mm.
In use, the laminate is produced in the form of a strip and it is generally wound in a spiral on a pipe 4 (FIG. 2), the adjacent windings overlapping each other.
Preferably, the windings indicated in 5 in FIG. 2 overlap approximately half the width of the strip, as shown in the drawing.
The windings 5 can be applied to the pipe 4 in various ways. In an exemplary embodiment, a roll of strip material 5 can be mounted near the pipe 4 at an angle relative to the axis thereof. The pipe 4 is then rotated and the strip material is passed through it, the roller of which moves along the pipe. Pressure rollers and the like can be used to bring the strip 5 into contact with the line 4 under the required pressure.
Of course, numerous modifications can be made to the invention and it is understood that these modifications all come within the scope of the claims below. For example, laminate could be used to protect. steel, concrete and other materials. It is believed that the invention will make it possible to reuse the material excavated from a trench as an embankment to a greater extent than that which can currently be envisaged. We are also considering the possibility of reusing, as backfill, pieces of rock up to 50 mm in diameter.
