Revêtement transparent pour le revêtement
<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=16.1>
Transparent coating for coating
<EMI ID = 1.1>
in particular flanges for moving parts of bodywork.
The present invention relates to a composition suitable for obtaining a transparent sealant resistant to corrosion, which can be used in particular as a protective coating for the clamping and coupling zones on doors, hoods, etc. trunk lids or motor vehicle trunks, at the end of the painting cycle.
Currently, the sealing coating of the aforementioned areas and other members is carried out partly at the stamping and forming station of the sheets, partly on the line at the end of the electrophoresis cycle; in both cases, hot cured sealants are used.
The sealing coating immediately following the stamping of the sheets has the drawback of being often applied to a support which is not free from the fatty residues of the stamping. The direct consequence is a completely ineffective waterproofing coating which does not guarantee protection against corrosive agents, with the consequence of recycling costs or with the risk of failure to detect such anomalies.
The sealing coating after electrophoresis is undoubtedly interesting insofar as it provides the desired anti-corrosive properties, but the effectiveness of the sealing coating remains, among other things, conditioned by the baking in the drying oven, that is to say. that is, the presence of the oven remains a mandatory condition.
The present invention relates to a composition
<EMI ID = 2.1>
characteristics of transparency and adhesion to enamel (with the obvious advantage of being able to be applied after the complete painting of the bodywork) and which has the property of being able to air dry at room temperature (so that the baking phase becomes superfluous).
The protective composition, based on acrylic resins, also has optimum plasticity characteristics (being able to withstand very considerable elongations without cracking) and the protective coating, by its inherent nature of acrylic product, is much more stable to aging; Due to
the high tixotropy, no flow occurs, at least in the thicknesses of normal applications (a few hundred microns).
The presence, among the components, of zinc phosphate as an anti-rust additive free from coloring is all the more suitable nowadays since it is an ecologically non-harmful compound, unlike
chromates commonly used until now as anti-rust products.
The protective coating can be applied with a brush or with an extrusion gun (it is essential to have a thickness of at least 200 to 300 microns) at the end of the entire painting cycle. The protective coating is dry to the touch, approximately 2 hours after application, depending on the thickness applied and the ambient conditions. Complete drying occurs approximately 24 hours after application.
The preservation of the sealant in the original closed jars is guaranteed for approximately one year.
The present invention is based on the discovery that a composition having the property indicated above can be obtained by the use of certain commercially available products, in particular industrial solutions of acrylic resins ACRYLOID B-67-MT and ZR-172 from Rohm ô Haas, in combination with the tixotropic additive THIXCIN R
from Castor Oil Company (hydrogenated castor oil).
This being accepted, the present invention relates to a protective composition resistant to corrosion, characterized by a weight analysis corresponding to that which can be obtained with the following ingredients intimately mixed:

Test specimen No. 1, as is
<EMI ID = 12.1>
<EMI ID = 13.1>
Test tube No. 4, after 500 hours in a thermo-cell
humidifier.
In all of these cases, the adhesion of the material to the support was greater than the cohesion of the material itself.
Behavior in water: A test piece similar to those used in the previous test, with the same process
curing, was immersed in water for 7 days at room temperature, according to a procedure such that the water level covers two-thirds of

no deterioration, detachment, swelling or softening of the material.
Protective power under salt spray: The test was carried out with the protective coating applied to a bare sheet metal and to the enamel; in both cases, the thickness of the coating, as in the previous tests, was 0.3 mm; however, a different length of stay in the salt spray chamber has been provided for in the following two cases:
250 hours for the protective coating on bare sheet metal;
hours for protective coating on enamel.
<EMI ID = 15.1>
rust; in the second case, neither rust formation nor deterioration of the protective coating and of the enamel was observed.
Storage stability: The protective coating concerned was introduced into a container with a capacity of 1 liter (hermetically sealed) and thus placed in an oven at 40 [deg.] C for 20 days; after this period, homogenization was carried out and the viscosity was measured at room temperature. A variation of 15% was thus observed relative to the original viscosity of the protective coating, which can be considered tolerable.
