<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=8.1>

<EMI ID=23.1>
<EMI ID=24.1>
cliquet principal 49.
<EMI ID=25.1>
<EMI ID=26.1>
<EMI ID=27.1>
(figure 4).

Winding device for seat belts with
pyrotechnically driven rapid rotation system.
The present invention relates to a device
winder for seat belts to be mounted in
vehicles, this device being constituted by a system of
rapid rotation driven by pyrotechnic gases and cooperating with a traction force limiter and by a belt retractor which is equipped with a ratchet device subjected to the action of an inertia balance and which
can be connected to the rapid rotation system by means of
propellants.
Due to the limited space available in the
vehicles and planes, efforts are made to ensure that
the dimensions of these pyrotechnic winding devices are not or not much larger than those of
automatic winding devices operating mechanically
cally. Another difficulty consists in ensuring the waterproofing
gas element subjected to the action of propellant gases while limiting friction. This last point is important for obtaining good efficiency with a low charge of propellant.
By the patent application R.A.F. 22 62 889, it is known, for tensioning the belt of passengers of an airplane or of occupants of a vehicle, a winding device in which the roller or drum for winding the belt is; a rotary piston made in the form of a belt pulley and actuated by the propellants. With this winding device, the rotary piston fitted with a vane can only be rotated by about 310 [deg.], Which is generally not sufficient to tighten the belt.
The object of the present invention is therefore to create a compact winding device for seat belts which makes it possible to avoid the drawbacks of known devices and in particular which allows, to ensure the belt tension, sufficient rotation of the cylinder. winding.
In a winding device of the aforementioned type, this result is achieved according to the invention by the fact that the rapid rotation system mounted with the belt retractor in a common housing consists of two annular chambers delimited by a shaft, a casing , a front cover and a rear cover and separated from each other by an annular disc, installed between the shaft and the casing, and by two pairs of fins each occupying the total surface of rotation of their annular chamber respective, in the two rooms,? each time a first and a second fins being integral with the shaft and the annular disc, in the front annular chamber,
the third fin being integral with the front cover and, <EMI ID = 1.1>
being integral with the rear cover, the latter being attached to the casing, and that the propellants reach the two annular chambers through two holes made in the shaft, in the annular chamber before the first fin and in the rear annular chamber the fourth fin which can be subjected to the action of gases and driven in rotation independently of one another or together with the elements which are associated with them and this until the first fin strikes the third fin and the fourth fin the second fin.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the shaft of the rapid rotation system is hollow and contains a solid propellant charge with ignition pellet.
According to the invention there is provided, connected to the shaft, a two-sided pivot or trunnion, the rear cover of the rapid rotation system being mounted movably in rotation on one side, and a lateral disc of the belt retractor being mounted so as to be able to rotate on the other side, this lateral disc being produced in the form of a ratchet wheel and comprising a plurality of holes distributed over its periphery.
According to another feature of the invention, provision is made to install in the rear annular chamber, preferably in the upper edge of the rear cover, a pin capable of being subjected to the action of the propellant gases and of entering a the holes in the side disc of the belt retractor.
The device according to the invention further comprises an inertia balance connected to a small pawl which, when the balance is tilted, can be lifted by a rocker or lever and then enter a recess of the ratchet wheel where it lifts. a main pawl and engages it carefully in the entry.
The invention makes it possible to combine in a very small space a usual automatic device for winding a mechanical belt with a pyrotechnic belt tensioner, this compact arrangement being essentially favored by
<EMI ID = 2.1>
short hollow of the rapid rotation system.
Despite this compact construction, the rapid rotation system contains two annular chambers with rotary feet which allow, with their fins driven by the propellant gases, a rotation of almost two times:
of the belt drum. This compact construction is further facilitated by the fact that the belt retractor and the shaft of the rapid rotation system are mounted on a common journal or pivot leaving only a narrow gap in between. This arrangement allows rapid connection of the two aforementioned groups by the pins subjected to the action of the propellant gases.
It is already known to provide the belt reentering devices with a ratchet system which causes locking of the belt drum during deceleration of the vehicle, caused for example by braking.
<EMI ID = 3.1>
device of this type, a stop pawl is lifted by an inertia balance and enters one of the teeth of the locking wheel. This immediate introduction of the pawl into the sharp teeth of the ratchet wheel subjects the two elements to excessive stresses. The arrangement according to the invention of a small pawl as a pre-locking and q engages in the gap before the main pawl allows a smoother latching of this main pawl where a considerable increase in the service life of the entire snap-in device. Furthermore, the main pawl may have a rounded front edge and the bottom of the tooth a corresponding rounded, which allows better seating and transmission of force? more important.
According to another feature of the invention, in a first annular slot between the housing and the casing is arranged a rack which, during a rotation of the rapid rotation system caused by the propellant gases, can rotate freely in an enlargement and which, in the event of reverse rotation of the rapid rotation system, rolls between the housing and the casing with a large consumption of energy.
After the impact of a vehicle and the subsequent tension of the belt, in order to obtain a damping curve which is as unpleasant as possible for the occupants of the vehicle retained by the belt, the kinetic energy acting on the latter as a result forward propulsion of the occupants, is transformed in a simple manner into deformation energy by the rack arranged between the internal wall of the housing and the cylindrical casing. This force limiter according to the invention thus allows a force limiting stroke of about two turns and therefore hardly requires additional space, unlike other known devices.
According to another feature of the invention, the rear cover of the rapid rotation system comprises on its outer periphery a projection shaped by a lathe and thus forms, between the lateral disc acting as a ratchet wheel and the housing, a second annular slot in which engages a wedge which is provided with an elastic tongue and which, during a rotation, caused by the propellants, of the rapid rotation system, is driven until it comes to rest against a main pawl stopper, its tongue protruding at the front
and resting on an edge of the second annular slot preventing its return to the rear and the locking of the main pawl. This device provides an easy to achieve means of lifting the main pawl lock into
the ratchet wheel, because during the reverse rotation following the restraint of the passenger and during the unwinding of
the belt, its drum must not be locked,

Despite the propellant gases, it was necessary to achieve a seal, effective even at high temperatures, of the surfaces of the fins in the annular chambers. By covering according to the invention the surfaces of the fins with plates or elements in expandable polystyrene for example,
under the influence of hot gases, a foam of relatively closed cellular structure is produced, guaranteeing perfect sealing.
To ensure the temperature range of use

with the proviso that, during the combustion of the propellant material, no corrosive material enters between the rotating elements, it is proposed, according to another feature of the invention, to use as solid propellant a pyrotechnic composition in powder or granular form and consisting of 55 to 75% sodium azide

The advantage of the propellant according to the invention lies in its range of use from -40 to +120 [deg.] And during combustion, the formation of Cu which, in particular during the unwinding of the rack, serves lubricant and prevents its jamming between the housing and the cylindrical shell.
The propellant charge is preferably ignited by an ignition pellet which, according to the invention, is provided with a set point breakdown point or with a capacitive system in the event of a contact resistance which is not damped or damped. This set-point breakdown point already responds to a defined voltage which is substantially lower than the breakdown voltage between the housing and the boot bridge. The capacitive system acts in such a way that, for example an electrostatic charge of at most 500 pF and 5 kV for a discharge

The main components of a winding device according to figure 1 are a rapid rotation system
<EMI ID = 10.1>
common tier 3. the rapid rotation system 1 consists of a shaft 4 with annular disc 5, a front cover 6, a rear cover 7 and by rotating vanes 8 to
11. The shaft 4 is rotatably mounted on the front and rear covers and encloses, in a bore 12, the pivots or journals 13 and 14 each provided with a collar, the rear journal 14 with two sides being produced with a rear reach 14a. The rear cover 7 is provided with a casing 15 forming a bowl, extending to the front cover 6 on which it rests. This results in between the shaft 4 and the casing 15 two annular chambers 16 and 17 separated from each other by the annular disc 5. In each of the annular chambers are arranged two rotary fins, the fins 8 and 9 being integral with the shaft 4 and the annular disc 5, the fin 10 attached to the front cover 6 (see Figure 2a) and the fin 11 to the rear cover 7 (see Figure 3a).
As the front cover 6 is rigidly connected to the housing 3 and the rear cover 7 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 4 and the journal 14, it follows that it is only the fin 10 in the front annular chamber 16 which is not rotating. In the transmission between the rear cover 7 and the casing
15 is inserted a small peg 18. In addition, the rear cover has a projection 19. From the annular chambers, bores, half of which are in the fins, exit outwards through the

of the tree, a hole 24- going towards the
front annular chamber 16 (see figure 2a) and a corresponding bore 25 going towards the rear annular chamber
17 (see figure 3a).
The belt retractor 2 is formed, in a known manner, by a cylinder or drum 30 on which a belt 31 is wound, by the front and rear side discs 32 and 33
and by a winding spring 34 made in the form
of a coil spring. The cylinder 30 is rotatably mounted on the bearing surface 14a. rapid rotation system and
a journal 35 mounted in the housing 3. The lateral disc
before 32, come in one piece with cylinder 30, is,
on its side facing the rapid rotation system, produced in the form of a ratchet wheel comprising the teeth
36 and the entredents 37 and is pierced with a number of holes 38 distributed around its periphery.
According to Figures 4 and 5, a latching device 40 reacting to inertia and cooperating with the wheel
ratchet 32 is housed in an appendix 3a of the housing 3. This latching device comprises, installed in a gasket 41 of the housing, a rocker 42 engaged in a bore

conical dement 44 in which is installed a hemispherical cap 45 of a lever or lever 46. On the latter is, in addition, mounted a lug 47 which can lift a small ..:

pal ;. The entire winding device can, by a flange 3b of appendix 3a of the housing, be mounted using a pin, not shown, to be threaded through a bore 39.
Between the internal wall of the housing 3 and the casing
15 is, in accordance with Figures 1 and 3a, inserted into an enlargement 50, of a first annular slot 51 between the projection 19 of the cover and the casing 3, a rack 52 that a spout 53 or a support 61 prevents from coming out accidentally from the annular gap. This first annular slot 51 is limited at the other end by a bead 54.
On the other side of this projection 19 of the cover 7 is
<EMI ID = 23.1>
tier 3, a second annular slot 55 into which is inserted a wedge or wedge 56 according to FIG. 6. This wedge 56, preferably made of plastic material having elastic properties, is inserted so as not to be entrained during a single rotation of the belt cylinder 30. It is only in case of rotation of the rapid rotation system 1 that it is driven by the cover 7 and
<EMI ID = 24.1>
main pawl 49. A tongue 59 of the corner 56 is then released and can come to rest against an edge 60 at the end of the annular slot 55.
Figures 8 and 9 represent different modes
realization for a joint between the rotating parts
of the rapid rotation system 1. In the perspective view
of FIG. 8, triangular plastic coverings 65 have been applied to the fins 8 and 9. These coatings, preferably made of expandable polystyrene, seal the rotating fins during the action of the hot propellant gases passing through the bores 66, of which only those located on the fin 9 are visible, this sealing being achieved by the fact that 'they become pasty or swell then ensuring, in both cases, the sealing of the outer edges 67 and 68 of the fins 8 and
9. On the fins 10 and 11 connected to the covers, it is possible, in accordance with the example shown for the fin 11, to use a coating 69 of square plastic material covering the entire surface of the fin. Another embodiment of the seal is shown in Figure 9 which corresponds to Figure 2a. Here, between the fins 8 and 10, is inserted a plastic bag 70 open in the direction of the hole 24. The bag 70 is, at its bend 71, made so thin that it tears under the action. hot gases produced by the propellant charge 22, so that during the rotation of the fins 8 and / or 10, the two parts of the bag remain thereon ensuring their sealing.
The ignition pellet 23 must, according to the figures
10 and 11, be ensured against any untimely ignition in the event of voltage caused by an electrostatic charge. In the event of an ignition pellet not secured against any untimely ignition of this kind, such a voltage can have the effect of an internal breakdown between a bridge 77 formed by the ignition wires 75 and 76 and a envelope 78 of the ignition pellet, thereby igniting the initiating charge 79 and the ignition charge 80. According to the figure
10, safety is ensured by a set point breakdown 81 (spark gap), placed between the ignition wire 75
and the envelope 78. This spark gap reacts to a defined voltage
<EMI ID = 25.1>
inside the ignition pellet. According to FIG. 11, there is provided between the ignition wire 75 and the casing 78, a capacitor 83 bridged by a safety resistor.

breakdown voltage between bridge 77 and casing 78.
The operating mode of the winding device according to the invention is as follows:
In normal use, the winding device operates from. known manner so that the helical spring 34 winds the belt 31 with a given force on the cylinder 30. In the event of deceleration of the vehicle, caused for example by a sudden braking, the balance 42 in the locking device 40 switches in the direction of arrow 85 and lever or rocker 46 and
<EMI ID = 27.1>
engages with an entredent 37 of the ratchet wheel 32
(figure 4). The small pawl 48, which thus serves as a preliminary locking, then lifts the main pawl 49 to bring it into this same entredent 37 thereby blocking the ratchet wheel 32 and preventing any further unwinding of the belt 31. Thanks to this locking in stages with the small pawl 48 serving as a preliminary locking, the main pawl 49 and the ratchet wheel 32 are extremely sparing and the locking can, due to the low mass of the small pawl 48, occur very quickly.
The flat support in the form of a body of revolution of the balance 42 in the trim 41 of the box allows a stable rest position of this balance in the event of normal movements of the vehicle and, at the same time, triggering of the locking for any slowing effects occurring. in all directions. When the load exerted on the belt and the deceleration of the vehicle cease, all the parts of the ratchet device 40 return to their rest position.
In the event of a collision with the vehicle, a sensor, not shown, generates an impulse in the ignition pellet.
23 which ignites the propellant charge 22 located in the shaft 4. The released propellants enter at the same time through the bores 24 and 25 into the two annular chambers 16 and 17 between the fins a 8 and 10 (figure 2a) and 9 and 11 (figure 3a). In the annular chamber 17, the small peg 18 is immediately subjected to a force which causes it to penetrate rapidly into one of the holes 38 of the ratchet wheel 32 and thereby couple the rapid rotation system 1 to the reel 2 of the belt.
The propellants cause in the annular chamber 16 a rotation of the fin 8 in the direction of arrow 86 (figure 2) and in the annular chamber 17 a rotation of the fin 11, fixed on the rear cover 7, in the direction of the arrow 87
(Figure 3a), the fin 9 rigidly connected to the fin 8 by the annular disc 5 being at the same time driven. In the position of FIG. 2b, the fin 8 a, with respect to the fin 10 which is the only one fixed in rotation, traversed approximately a half-rotation in the annular chamber 16 and this in the direction of the arrow 86. FIG. 3b corresponds to this position of rotation with the fin 9 in the annular chamber 17.
It can be seen in this figure that the fin 11, and consequently the cylinder 30, has at the same time gone through an almost complete rotation, the belt 31 being wound in the direction of the arrow 88.
The rapid rotation system can tighten the belt as much as possible until the fin 8 comes to rest on the fixed fin 10 and that the fin 11 comes to rest on the fin 9 after two rotations not all completely complete. This case is represented in Figures 2b and 3b by dashed lines, the fins in their final position

in the annular chambers 16 and 17 is damped in the last part of their travel by the fact that the air in the annular chambers between the fins is compressed before being able to escape through the small bores 20 and 21. By adjusting the dimension of these holes, it is therefore possible to vary the damping of the tension of
