<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
four, qu'on le soumet ensuite à une pyrogénation à température ;
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>

<EMI ID=14.1>
au moyen de l'exemple suivant..
EXEMPLE

<EMI ID=16.1>
- le four est facilement démontahle en éléments pouvant être tran- portés sur le lieu d'utilisation par des moyens de transport conventionnels, ce qui est un avantage important par rapport aux installations fixes non déplaçables ;
- le dispositif ne nécessite ni combustible extérieur ni combustion du bois carbonisé, l'apport des calories se faisant par la combustion en défaut d'air des gaz de carbonisation dans une couronne-foyer interne ;
de la production désirée ;
- du fait de son fonctionnement en continu et de sa conception, l'usure et l'entretien sont réduits au minimum, et une longue durée de service peut être espérée ;

Process for the continuous preparation of carbon from
wood and device for its implementation.
The present invention relates to a new process for the continuous preparation of charcoal.
<EMI ID = 1.1>
for the implementation of this method.
Techniques for the continuous production of charcoal are already known using suitable vertical or horizontal ovens in which the load of wood is gradually transformed into charcoal respectively during the natural descent or movement by a.

<EMI ID = 3.1>
either from an external combustion chamber or from an internal partial combustion. However, these techniques require
<EMI ID = 4.1>
tresses.
Therefore, the aim of the present invention is to provide a process for the preparation of charcoal.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
<EMI ID = 6.1>
and maintenance. This goal is achieved by the objects of this
<EMI ID = 7.1>
continuous preparation of charcoal, characterized by
the fact that the wood is dried in a first zone of a
oven, which is then subjected to pyrogenation at temperature;
<EMI ID = 8.1>
the charcoal formed in a third zone of the furnace, and
by the fact that a first part of the hot gases resulting from the pyrogenation of the wood circulates in the same direction as the latter and is partially burned in the absence of air to supply
the calories necessary for the maintenance of pyrogenation,! a second part of these hot gases being brought upstream into the drying zone where it circulates in the opposite direction to that of the wood.
The second object of this invention consists of a device for carrying out the above process, consisting of a vertical oven, characterized in that it j
1 comprises from top to bottom respectively a drying zone, a pyrogenation zone and a cooling zone, and by the fact that it is also provided with a device for introducing air and combustion in
upstream of the pyrogenation zone comprising means
control of the quantity of air introduced; a device for recycling pyrogenation gases on the one hand
upstream of the pyrogenation zone and on the other hand in
downstream of the drying zone; a circulation device
and cooling the gases in the cooling zone; and a charcoal airlock at the lower end of the cooling zone.
The single attached drawing illustrates schematically
and by way of example an embodiment of a vertical oven used for implementing the method according to the invention.
With reference to this drawing, the vertical furnace, generally made of metal, first comprises at the top a part
<EMI ID = 9.1>
lower 2, then another also cylindrical part, but with a diameter greater than zone I, constituting the pyrogenation zone II; the lower part of the furnace comprises a cylindrico-conical part constituting the zone
cooling III; this zone III ends in a lower part IV for drawing off the cold charcoal 3, this part comprising an airlock 4 and an orifice
output 5.
As shown in the accompanying drawing, the vertical oven comprises an air introduction device 6 com-

drying I in 9, a part escaping upwards through the mass of wood 1 which descends by gravity and another part being recycled in the pyrogenation zone II. The fraction of the gases which escapes upwards passing through the drying zone I corresponds to the fraction of the combustion gases not burnt to provide calories in the zone II. The arrow 10 indicates the direction of circulation of the burnt pyrogenation gases which therefore corresponds to the direction of advance in
the kiln of charred wood; this direction of circulation 10 of the hot gases is reversed with respect to similar devices working continuously.
Finally, the appended drawing also shows schematically the device 11 for circulating and cooling the gases from the cooling zone IV, these gases being withdrawn at 12, that is to say in the hot part located between the two zones II and III. , and reintroduced at 13 into the cold lower part of zone III; the circulation of these gases

at the water.
The device according to the invention, as described with reference to the appended drawing, is generally constructed by elements which are fixed to one another, for example by bolting, and is held on a ring carried by a frame, for example metal with three or four feet. This device is therefore easily removable into elements, which can then be transported to the place of use.
by conventional means of transport.
For a production of about 1500 to 2000 tonnes of charcoal per year, the dimensions of the furnace are around 15m high and have a maximum diameter of 3m. The furnace is generally fed with round wood or unseasoned and loose waste, 30 to 40 cm in length and in-

can also be used, provided that the devices for circulating the gases can operate properly with acceptable pressure drops.
<EMI ID = 14.1>
using the following example.
EXAMPLE
After being loaded at the top of the kiln by any means, the wood descending, traverses the drying zone I against the current of the excess hot gases (at around 100oC).
Then it is gradually transformed into coal
of wood in the carbonization zone II. The gases and vapors produced by pyrogenation are added to the circulating gases.
A part of the gas is burned in the absence of air in a crown-hearth inside the oven and provides the necessary heat back-up,
the setting of the carbonization temperature is done by the valve V acting on the quantity of air introduced. The temperature reached in the carbonization zone II is generally of the order of 550 [deg.] C, the temperature of the gases withdrawn in 7 being then about 500 [deg.] C and that at which these gases are introduced in
8 and 9 of 400 [deg.] C approximately.
The hot charcoal then enters cooling zone III, where its temperature is brought back to ambient T [deg.]
<EMI ID = 15.1>
at the water.
The cold charcoal is withdrawn by means of an airlock 4 at a frequency which depends on the capacity of the furnace for the desired production and on the quality of the wood used.
With an oven 15m high and 3m outside diameter at
the carbonization zone, and the circulation of hot gases being
<EMI ID = 16.1>
tation of 20 tons / day of oak wood cut into 40 cm, coming from sawmill waste, we obtained 4050Kgr / day of charcoal
of very good quality wood with 8% volatile matter.
The main advantages presented by the method and the device for the continuous preparation of charcoal according to the present invention are as follows:
- the furnace is easily dismantled into elements which can be transported to the place of use by conventional means of transport, which is a significant advantage over fixed non-movable installations;
- The device requires neither external fuel nor combustion of the charred wood, the calories being supplied by the combustion in lack of air of the carbonisation gases in an internal hearth ring;
- the device is very easy to operate:
the wood is fed by skip, to keep the full level constant, the displayed temperature is maintained in the carbonization zone by adjusting the quantity of air introduced
(valve V), and the charcoal withdrawal frequency, through an airlock, is set by the furnace capacity
the desired production;
- due to its continuous operation and design, wear and maintenance are reduced to a minimum, and a long service life can be expected;
- Finally, the process described makes it possible to obtain, with a high yield, a cold charcoal ready for use, of constant quality and of adjustable volatile matter content.
