Process for processing rolled steel products.
The main qualities that users demand from rolled steel products are, among others, an elastic limit as high as possible for the steel grade used as well as, depending on the case and the use for which the product is intended, resistance to fatigue, ductility, weldability or even satisfactory drawing.
To this end, the applicant has already recommended subjecting the rolled product, as soon as it leaves the finishing stand of the rolling mill, to appropriate cooling by means of a fluid, so that anartensitic quenching and / or bainitic of the surface layer of all or part of the product; in addition, it is appropriate that at the outlet of the cooling zone by the fluid, the unhardened part of the rolled product is at a temperature sufficient to allow, during a subsequent stay in air, to achieve tempering of the surface layer of martensite and / or bainite.
The cooling fluid used for the implementation of this process is generally water, with or without usual additives, aqueous solutions of inorganic salts, etc ...; this fluid can also be a mist, obtained for example by suspending water in a gas, or else a gas, for example water vapor.
From a practical point of view, the desired cooling of the rolled product is obtained by choosing the cooling devices and by adequately adjusting the length and flow characteristics of the cooling bars.
The present invention relates to a method for determining the conditions of application of the quenching and self-tempering process of the surface layer of products <EMI ID = 1.1> In practice, the process in question is implemented in an installation including the main elements

calm air) are in fixed and irremovable locations, which fixes the length available for the quenching zone. Only rarely can the installation be adapted to the possible requirements of the process.
Usually the speed and temperature of the rolled product as it exits the last stand of the rolling mill are also process data.
Furthermore, the process is applied to only one product at a time, and consequently we know the dimensions of this product, the composition of the steel of which it is made, and therefore the CCT (Continuous Cooling Transformation) diagram. .
Knowledge of this diagram makes it possible to determine a certain number of conditions under which the process treating the product in question will apply, in this case the temperature at the start of martensitic transformation, the maximum time available to carry out the surface hardening. , especially at the desired depth.
To define the characteristics of the cooling devices, for example the length of the ramps and the flow rates of fluid to be applied through them, it is also possible to establish the curves giving the temperature gradients at the skin and at the core of the rolled product subjected to the envisaged treatment; it is thus possible to determine the quantity of calories to be extracted.
From the known data of the treatment installation and the product to be treated, and by means of the evaluation of the cooling needs to be applied, it is therefore possible

change in the skin temperature of the product, from the end of the martensitic and / or bainitic hardening; in fact, during the period following quenching, the temperature of the skin rises while that of the central part, for its part, does not cease to decrease since the exit of the stand of the rolling mill. Each evolving in their own right, the temperatures at the skin and at the core of the same cross section converge towards a point called "equalization temperature", from which the two curves will travel in a substantially parallel manner. This "equalization temperature" is easily detectable since, subsequently, the temperature of the skin begins to decrease again: it is therefore a "maximum" point on the curve of the evolution of the temperature of the skin. skin over time.
It should be noted that this temperature, called equalization temperature, is not necessarily that prevailing in the whole cross section, because there can remain a difference, between

In a particular embodiment of the method of the invention, the value of the "equalization temperature" is chosen from a diagram giving the evolution of the elastic limit (Re) as a function of said temperature. equalization (Te) of the product.
The applicant has in fact observed, unexpectedly, that there was a direct relationship between the equalization temperature which has just been defined and the mechanical properties of the product subjected to surface hardening and self-tempering such as it was. was recalled, and that whatever the steel grade, even in the presence of alloying elements (Nb).
According to the invention, the desired convergence of the temperatures of the skin after tempering and of the core during cooling is achieved, by choosing the cooling devices and the appropriate fluid flow rates.
By way of example of application of the process of the invention, mention will be made of the case of a steel round 14 mm in diameter, having the following composition:
carbon 0.15%,
manganese: 0.97
silicon: 0.05%,
the end of rolling temperature being 950 [deg.] C, the round would have, in the state untreated by surface quenching and self-tempering, an elastic limit Re of 33 kg / mm.
Treated according to the process in question, in the context of the present invention, the round had a limit
