<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>

"Manufacturing process for insulating refractory products and
the products obtained according to this process ".
The invention relates to a method of making insulating refractory products based on a mixture containing aluminous materials, glassy spheroidal bodies and clay.
Insulating refractory products are used in:
the construction of furnaces with a view to significantly reducing the weight of materials as well as the energy required to reach or maintain a determined temperature.
The products in question are characterized, on the one hand, by a thermal conductivity as low as possible
and, on the other hand, by a high refractory power, that is to say, a stability of shape and:. of sufficient size at the temperatures of use. They must also have a mechanical strength allowing their transport and their use. This resistance must be high enough to withstand the mechanical stresses that are created in the masonry. Unfortunately, these various qualities are frequently incompatible with each other. The methods used to date tend to achieve the best compromise between these requirements.
Thus, for example, it has been proposed to obtain insulating refractory masses from mixtures of oxy-. aluminum, binder clay and glassy spheroidal bodies, especially fly ash from pulverized coal boilers. During the firing of the constituents, the spheroidal bodies - which give the mass a very porous structure, melt and together with the aggregate form a very solid mass with high mechanical resistance.
It is known that during the cooking of these pro-

principal killers, these two compounds react progressively with each other to ultimately result in a crystalline mixture of
<EMI ID = 2.1>
is particularly stable and refractory.
However, the reactions which take place between the compounds to arrive at the formation of the final refractory are slow. Biles may not be completed during the cooking of the product and continue during use. This results in an instability of the dimensions of the finished products, which leads to a lowering of the limit temperature at which an installation equipped with such refractories can be used.
The invention aims to achieve a method which: overcomes
to these drawbacks.
For this purpose, a binder clay is used, the expansion curve of which indicates a contraction greater than that of the aforementioned aluminous materials.
In an advantageous embodiment, in order to accelerate the reaction rate of the aluminous materials
and clay, these bodies are finely ground and premixed before the addition of the glassy spheroidal bodies.
One characteristic of the invention resides in the fact that compounds rich in potassium such as potassium disilicate or metasilicate are added to the aforementioned mixture in a proportion such that the final composition is represented by a point situated inside the balance triangle Mullite - Leucite Corundum.
The invention also relates to the products obtained according to the process according to the invention. -
Other details and advantages will emerge from the description which will be given below of a method for manufacturing insulating refractory products, according to the invention. This description is given only by way of example and does not limit the invention.
Expansion studies of insulating refractory products have shown that, in order to strengthen the contact between the constituents, the main reagent (the clay which occupied the largest volume) must contract, during firing, more than the reagent whose volume is the smallest (the aluminous material).
The process according to the invention, based on these studies, consists in choosing, from the range of refractory clays, a binder clay whose expansion curve indicates a contraction greater than that of luminous materials (alumina, aluminum hydroxide or raw bauxite. ).
The process according to the invention also consists in causing an acceleration of the reaction of the constituents by ensuring intimate contact between them. This effect can be achieved
by grinding the aluminous material and the clay as finely as possible, so that, for example, the whole of the grains pass through a n [deg.] 30 sieve, and mixing them thoroughly before the addition of the spheroidal bodies glassy.
The method according to the invention is still based on
a judicious choice of constituents. The reaction rate of the constituents can indeed be improved by using as materials

a particularly reactive form which combines very quickly with raetakaolin, the decomposition product of clay, to form the mixture of cristobalite and mullite mentioned above.
The compositions richest in aluminum oxide are also targeted by the process according to the invention in the sense that by ensuring as close a contact as possible between the finely ground substances, a more complete synthesis is also brought about here at a lower temperature. .
Finally, it is also important to significantly raise the refractory power and therefore the limit temperature at which the products can be used.
