Abstract

A fancy edging band comprises a knitted tape formed by using latch needles supported on a needle bar to knit lines of chain stitches to hold together weft yarns deposited in zig-zag configurations by yarn guides, and slivers (e.g. of different colours) are fed by silver guides through loops formed by the weft yarns along one edge of the tape and the slivers are folded over to form tassels. Auxiliary latch needles are slideable in grooves in needle bar and are actuated to apply tying yarns (e.g. elastic) around the tassels, such that each tying yarn is wrapped around each tassels, and extends between adjacent tassels. A control device (e.g. an electromagnetically driven crank actuated by a cam operated micro-switch, or an electromagnet latch to lock the auxiliary needles to the needle bar) is provided to maintain the auxiliary needles in a retracted non-operative posn. during passage of the tassels, such that no stitch is formed through the body of the tassels, and the tassels are not deformed. The device also enables different coloured tassels to be applied.
