Abstract

A blast furnace is charged with precursors free of coke or other carbonaceous fuel, and reducing gas, esp. H2 mixed with water vapour and N2, but practically free of CO, is injected into the lower part of the furnace at 1700-2500 degrees C, after preheating in a plasma furnace. The ore is reduced and the molten iron or steel collects in the hearth in the usual way. Additions of cast iron granules are made to bring the carbon content to the desired value. Process is designed to avoid the need for coke or to reduce the excessive carburisation of iron and steel.

Description

 <EMI ID=1.1>

 <EMI ID=2.1>

 <EMI ID=5.1>

 <EMI ID=7.1>

 <EMI ID=8.1>

 <EMI ID=9.1>

 <EMI ID=10.1>

  "Process for making liquid iron or steel"

 <EMI ID = 1.1>

or liquid steel in a metallurgical vessel such as a shaft furnace and in particular in a blast furnace.

We know that the cast iron produced in the blast furnace results from the reduction of iron ores mainly under the action of the carbon of the charge and the CO formed at? nozzles or higher.

Moreover, in order to reduce the consumption of coke which is

 <EMI ID = 2.1>

to replace "part of the coke of the feed and part of the hot blast blown in the main nozzles by a certain quantity of hot reducing gases

 <EMI ID = 3.1> <EMI ID = 4.1>

seek to produce iron or liquid steel by reduction of iron ores, removing coke from the feed to avoid excessive or controllable carburization of the metal, and covering all of the heat and reducing element requirements. by means of an appropriate injection of hot reducing gases.

The present invention relates in particular to a method making it possible to ensure such production either in a metallurgical vessel specially equipped for this purpose, must and preferably in a shaft furnace and in particular

 <EMI ID = 5.1>

The process, object of the present invention, in which one manufactures

iron or liquid steel by reduction of iron ores in a metallurgical vessel such as, for example, a shaft furnace and in particular a blast furnace, is essentially characterized in that a load is placed in the vessel practically free of carbonaceous fuel (coke) and in that the said receptacle, preferably in its lower part, is injected with hot reducing gases containing mainly hydrogen with optionally

water vapor and an inert gas such as nitrogen, but practically free

carbon monoxide (CC), said reducing gases being heated to high temperatures between 17CO [deg.] C and 2500 [deg.] C by means of suitable plasma ovens.

To obtain a product whose carbon content is well determined,

 <EMI ID = 6.1>

fuel materials, such as iron shot for example.

In the event that it becomes necessary to add update elements

 <EMI ID = 7.1>

preferably those of these elements which are more noble than iron, the others being added after production of the metal.

 <EMI ID = 8.1>

these alloying elements are advantageously introduced into the filler in the form of additions in pieces.

 <EMI ID = 9.1>

in the injection circuit a quantity of hydrogen equal to that used for the formation of the H20 eliminated by washing and drying the gases leaving the container

 <EMI ID = 10.1>

It is obvious that all known operating modalities relating to the injection of hot reducing gases into the shaft furnaces and the heating by means of plasma furnaces are applicable within the framework of the present invention.
