Abstract

High-purity sulphonic acids, with a mol. wt. of >600 are prepd. by (a) adding 0.2-0.6 parts, of a sulphonating agent (esp. oleum) to 1 pt. of dewaxed, solvent-treated base lubricating oil, with a viscosity of 140-230 SUS at 99 degrees C and a VI of >=85; (b) treating the mixt. with 0.15-3 pts. H2O and 0.5-1.5 pts. of a volatile satd. hydrocarbon solvent (pref. hexane) per part of the oil; (c) treating the mixt. with 1-10 wt.% (based on the oil) of a low mol. wt. water-sol. sulphonic acid (I); (d) allowing the mixt. to form an aqs. phase and a hydrocarbon phase; and (e) discarding the aqs. phase. (I) can also be formed in situ by adding a low-mol. wt. aromatic cpd. to the starting mixt. The prods. (as salts) are useful as detergent additives for lubricants.
