Abstract

Reducing gases are prepd. by partial catalytic combustion of a hot mixt. of gaseous hydrocarbons, steam and O2; part of the reducing gas which is produced is recycled directly into the feed mixt. of gaseous hydrocarbons and steam. The amt. of steam in the reaction mixt. is reduced and a pressurised gas, at high temp. and with high reducing power, i.e. with high H2 + CO content, is obtd. Deposition of C is avoided. Removal of CO2 from the gas before use is unnecessary, and cooling and re-heating of the gas are avoided. The reducing gases are used in hydrogenation and reducing processes, for the synthesis of NH3 or methanol, or in metallurgy.
