Title cpds are of formula: R1-Ph-W-CH2-CH(OR)-CH2Y (where R=H or lower alkanoyl; R1=H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or trifluoromethyl; W=-O, -S, sulphinyl or sulphonyl; R2=H, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy, or trifluoromethyl), including salts. Prepn is by reacting A-CH2-Z with A'-H (where A=Y or R'-Ph-W-Z=-CHCH2 or -CHCH2-X; X=halogen, alkylsulphonyl- oxy or arylsulphonyloxy; A'=Y when A=R'-Ph-W- or vice versa). Reaction is carried out in solvent at 20 degrees C-b.pt. When Z=C(OR)HCH2-X, reaction is pref. in presence of acid-binding agent.
