Abstract
Electrolysis cell for the prodn. of chlorine from an aqs. soln. of an alkali metal chloride, has a cathodic chamber limited by a first permeable partition and contg. a cathode, and an anodic chamber limited by a second permeable partition and contg. an anode, the two partitions being vertical and parallel and forming together a compartment communicating with an inlet passage for the soln. The first permeable partition consists of electrically non-conducting material and is applied to the cathode which has a perforated iron structure, and the second permeable partition consists of electrically non-conducting material, and is applied to the anode which has a perforated structure of film-forming material covered with an active coating catalysting the discharge of chlorine ions. The cathodic chamber communicates with a hydrogen discharge passage, and with catholyte outlet passage, and the anodic chamber communicates with a chlorine outlet passage, and with a circuit for extracting anolyte and recycling it to the central compartment,, this circuit having a device for dechlorinating the anolyte.
