Abstract

Aromatic org. isocyanates are made by reacting an aromatic nitro cpd. and carbon monoxide in the pres. of a catalyst comprising a cpd. of a metal of the Pt group, an aromatic N-contg. heterocyclic cpd. and a cpd. with active H pref. chosen from water, H2, hydrogen halides, boric acids, formic acid, oxalic acid and/or formaldehyde. Pref. nitro cpds. such as nitrobenzene, dinitrobenzenes, p-nitrotoluene, dinitrotoluenes, dinitrometaxylenes, etc., are reacted under partial CO pressures of 10-1500 a tm. at 100-250 degrees C e.G. for 1/2-10 hrs. in the pres. of a catalyst such as bis(pyridine)-palladium chloride and water. Process gives high yields of isocyanate cpds. together with rapid conversions. Products are useful for the prodn. of polyurethane foams and elastomers.
