Abstract

Reducing gas contg. mainly CO and H2 is produced by treating coke-oven gas, contg. CH4, CO and H2, in such a way as to liquefy the CH4, sepng. the CH4 from the H2 and CO, and reforming the CH4. Coke-oven gas, available in Fe works, can be economically utilised. A smaller reformer plant can be used, since only a part of the coke-oven gas passes through it. The cost of prodn. of reducing gas is greatly lowered. Excess steam produced in the reformer can be utilised in situ. The hot reducing gas is injected into a blast furnace to decrease the coke consumption.
