Abstract

Method comprises quantitatively measuring the change in stresses as the glass is heated using an optical method of observation. This method directly measures the point at which the glass is ready for quenching and is superior to other indirect methods e.g. glass temp measurement or heating time. No contact is necessary with the glass. The same appts. may be used to treat different glasses of different sizes. The appts. comprises a radiation source, a polariser, and optical bloc, the glass to be quenched a detection system consisting of an optical device, a second polariser, a quartz. wedge for measuring the optical delay an analyser and a calibrator which orders the start of the quench either manually or automatically.
