Abstract

Deposition of wax from an oil is inhibited by incorporating in the oil a copolymer of ethylene and a monoethylenically unsaturated ester which is (1) a vinyl or allyl ester of saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid or (2) a saturated aliphatic ester of an unsaturated aliphatic aciboxylic acid. The pref. comonomer esters are vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate. The pref. copolymer is an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, partic. one contg. 35-55 wt.% vinyl acetate and having a melt index of 1-600 g/10 mins. and esp. a copolymer contg. 37-42 wt.% vinyl acetate and having a melt index of 45-70 g/10 mins. The inhibitor is partic. useful for adding to a well producing a wax-contg. crude. In addition to inhibiting the deposition of wax, the copolymer is also useful in removing previously deposited wax from metal surfaces.
