Abstract

Reduction of residual monomer in polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated aromatic compounds (I) is attained by incorporation of 0.1-0.6 pts. of an aliphatic acid (II) per 100 pts. of I. Pref. (II) is 12-22C aliphatic acid. Concn. of ferrous or ferric salts of C1-22 aliphatic acids is (II) is determined and opt. adjusted to >=0.1 wt.% of salt (based on (II)). (I) is pref. styrene, (II) is pref. stearic acid and the salt is pref. ferric or ferrous stearate and is 0.1-5.0 wt.% (on (II)). The presence of small amounts of an iron salts of (II) reduces monomer content and polymerisation time.
