<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
I by acylating a 2-arylamino-imidazoline- (2) of general formula:
EMI2.1
where Ar has the meaning given to it above, by means of an acylating agent of the formula:
EMI2.2
where R represents a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy or aralkoxy radical and X represents a halogen atom, which is preferably a chlorine or bromine atom, or an alkoxy radical. The reaction is carried out in the usual manner for acylations. Reactants of formula II and formula III are reacted preferably in an inert solvent and at low temperature.
The reaction conditions depend on the alkalinity of the arylaminoimidazoline as well as the reactivity of the acylating agent.
The reaction gives acylated derivatives of formula 1 - bearing the acyl radical either on the bridging nitrogen atom or on a nitrogen atom of the ring of the imidazoline ring.
Which of the nitrogen atoms is acylated depends mainly on the nucleophilicity of the nitrogen atom in question, on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
electrophilic character of the carbonyl compound used for acylation, as well as the steric hindrance in each particular case. It is easy to establish by nuclear magnetic resonance measurements with certainty which of the two nitrogen atoms in question has been acylated.
The N-acyl-2-arylamino-imidazolines- (2) of general formula I which are the subject of the invention can be converted in the usual manner into their physiologically acceptable acid addition salts. . Acids suitable for the formation of salts are, for example, hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid, hydriodic acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, valerian acid, oxalic acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid , citric acid, malic acid, benzoic acid, phthalic acid,
cinnamic acid.,. salicylic acid, ascorbic acid, 8-chlorotheophyllin and so on.
The compounds of general formula I which are the subject of the invention have interesting properties for lowering blood pressure and can therefore find their application, for example, in the treatment of various manifestations of blood pressure. hypertonia. the compounds of general formula I, as well as their acid addition salts, can be administered orally, enterally or parenterally.
