<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Afin de mieux faire ressortir les caractéristiques et avantages de l'invention, une mise en oeuvre de cette dernière est décrite ci-après à simple titre illustratif, référence étant faite aux dessins annexés, dans lesquels: la figure 1 est une vue en élévation d'un revolver prêt à lancer un projectile, en l'occurrence une grenade lacrymo- gène, conformément à l'invention; la figure 2 est une coupe axiale , à échelle agrandie, du dispositif de lancement selon l'invention, représenté à la figure 1, ainsi que du projectile; la figure 3 est une coupe axiale d'une variante d'exé- cution du dispositif de lancement proprement dit;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

de l'ordre do 150 ga.

"Device for launching a projectile".
The present invention relates to a device for launching a projectile, particularly by bullet firing using a hand weapon, such as a revolver or the like. ¯¯¯, ¯
It has already been proposed to launch projectiles, for example tear gas canisters, using guns or rifles. The devices proposed for this purpose generally use blank cartridges or special cartridges. They therefore have the disadvantage that the user must be in possession of both a rifle and special cartridges.
It was also proposed to launch projects,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
for example offensive grenades, using a war rifle and normal cartridges, with bullet. In such devices, the rear of the projectile is generally provided with a bullet trap, intended to brake the bullet to prevent damage to the projectile.
It appeared that the launching of projectiles, such as tear gas, smoke and other grenades by means of a revolver or pistol, would have serious advantages.
This is the case, for example, for law enforcement agencies, normally equipped with revolvers, which sometimes have to act very quickly, before a situation escalates. It is also recognized that the presence of police officers armed with rifles, in a place of incipient or latent unrest, could have an adverse psychological effect on the appeasement of the agitation.
If the fact of being able to launch projectiles using a revolver therefore has many advantages, its practical realization presents serious difficulties, by the very nature of the weapon used advancement, difficulties which are not encountered with the same acuteness in the case of launching using guns. These difficulties are further increased if we want to perform the launching using a normal bullet cartridge.
Among the aforesaid difficulties, it is necessary to quote, the relative fragility of the projectiles such as tear gas grenades and the like, the reduced force of recoil and the low weight required by the shooting with the revolver, the protection of the shooter against the projections from the departure of the gun. projectile, etc ....
The aim of the invention is to resolve these difficulties in a simple and efficient manner.
To this end, a device of the type in question is proposed, comprising on the one hand, an adapter tube containing, in the vicinity of one of its ends, a damping cylinder
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
made of a relatively elastic material and, on the other hand, a support tuba, contained in the projectile and opening onto the rear face of the latter, the bottom of this tube carrying a primer, said adapter tube being intended to be inserted, by a from its ends, into said support tube and to be slid, by its other end, around the barrel of the weapon used for launching.
In practice, said support tube will preferably form an integral part of the projectile,
In order to better demonstrate the characteristics and advantages of the invention, an implementation of the latter is described below for illustrative purposes only, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is an elevational view of a revolver ready to launch a projectile, in this case a tear gas canister, in accordance with the invention; FIG. 2 is an axial section, on an enlarged scale, of the launching device according to the invention, shown in FIG. 1, as well as of the projectile; FIG. 3 is an axial section of an alternative embodiment of the actual launching device;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the shock absorber cylinder after firing and FIG. 5 is a view along arrow F5 in FIG. 4.
The device according to the invention therefore makes it possible to launch a projectile, in this case a tear gas grenade 1. using a revolver 2,
The actual launching device comprises an adapter tube 3 preferably of flexible material (cardboard, plastic, etc.) containing, in the vicinity of one of its ends, a damping cylinder 4, made of a material
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The projectile 1 comprises an envelope 5 of synthetic material, containing an annular charge 6 which generates gas as well as a central charge 7 for firing said charge 6.
The open face of said envelope is closed by a cover 8, held in the closed position by folding the corresponding edge of the envelope 5 around an annular flange 9 of said cover.
The latter is provided with a central orifice through which a support tube 10 is forced, the edge of said orifice elastically engaging in a peripheral groove
11 provided for this purpose on the tube 10.
The bottom 12 of the tube 10 comprises a recess 13 in which is housed a primer 14, said recess extending by an axial channel 15 opening out inside said casing, facing said firing charge 7.
The inside diameter of tube 3 is equal to or slightly greater than the outside diameter of barrel 16 of gun 2, while its outside diameter is substantially equal to the inside diameter of tube 10. '
The wall of the tube 3 is provided with a slot 17 extending from its free edge, along a generatrix of said wall, the width of this slot being substantially equal to the thickness of the front sight 18 provided at the end of the barrel. 16.
In the variant embodiment according to FIG. 3, an additional propellant charge 19 is provided in the tube 3, this charge being held between a damping disc 20 and a cup 21 with axial passage 22, carrying a primer 23 in its center. , these elements being held between the folded edges 24 of the tube 3 on the one hand, and the damping cylinder 4 forming a plug, on the other hand. In another embodiment, not shown, the second primer 23 is simply omitted. The cup 21 could then either remain or be replaced by a disc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The device described above operates as follows. If it has not already been done, the tube 3 is inserted into the support tube 10 forming part of the projectile 1. The projecting part of the tube 3 is then slipped around the barrel.
16, the front sight 18 penetrating into the slot 17. The weapon is then held in the usual way at arm's length and a normal cartridge, with a bullet, is fired. This bullet enters the tube 3, passes through the cylinder 4, transmitting most of its kinetic energy to the projectile which, as a result, is launched and ensures the percussion of the primer 14 either by direct impact thereon, or by the pressure exerted by cylinder 4 if the bale is immobilized in this cylinder. The latter ignites charge 7, which in turn ignites charge 6.
In the execution according to FIG. 3, the primer 23 has obviously been struck which will be struck by the bullet and will ignite the charge 19, the combustion of which will provide additional thrust to the projectile and will ignite the primer 14 by. deformation of the disc 20 ensuring percussion.
The operation of the damping cylinder 4 is quite remarkable. Numerous practical tests have confirmed that the bullet perforated said cylinder axially without substantially altering the material thereof. During the progression of the bullet through said cylinder, the material closes behind the bullet, thus forming a shutter and preventing any rearward projection of debris liable to injure the shooter. This is particularly unclean when simple lead bullets are used because droplets of molten lead, projected when the bullet is crushed against the bottom 12, respectively the cap 21, could otherwise injure the shooter.
In addition, the elasticity of cylinder 4 prevents
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
any damage to the launching device and the projection

"'tile, When shooting.
This amazing action of the damper cylinder 4 is illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, which show such a cylinder collected after a test shot. This cylinder still firmly held the bullet 25, the head 26 of which was completely crushed following the impact against the bottom 12 of the tube.
10. The rear face of cylinder 4, through which said bullet 25 had entered, had in its center a hole 27 similar to a needle hole.
Preferably, the damping cylinder will be made of hard rubber (Shore A70 to 75) while the casing 5 1'¯ will advantageously be made of high density polyethylene.
The tube 3 not having to undergo any particular stress, can be made of any suitable material, preferably of inexpensive plastic.
The total weight of the grenade will advantageously

of the order of 150 ga. It is obvious that various modifications can be made to the above-described device, without however departing from the scope of the invention. Thus, for example, it would be possible to produce the support tube and the adapter tube in a single piece. If the emphasis above has been on the launching of grenades, it goes without saying that ¯ the principles of the invention can also be applied for the launching of other objects, such as mooring lines, flares, etc. ...
