<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
On
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

EMI7.2

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Method and composition for preventing tarnishing of metals.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a composition which pockets the tarnishing of metals. It relates in particular to a composition for pocketing the tarnishing of metals, which contains a compound selected from those corresponding to the formulas HS-RSR 'and HS-R "-SR" -SH in which R is an alkylene group containing 1. with 10 carbon atoms R 'is selected from saturated aliphthic, saturated and unsaturated cyoloaliphatic groups including those derived from polycyclic oycloaliphatic compounds, and alkaryl containing from 5 to 25 carbon atoms and R "is an alkylene group containing 6 with 12 carbon atoms.
The invention also relates to a metal polishing composition containing a mild abrasive agent for removing tarnish, as well as a compound of one of the above formulas for preventing tarnishing.
It is known that tarnishable metals, such as copper and silver, tarnish rapidly in normal atmospheres. A housewife who owns silverware, silverware, or copper utensils must necessarily polish, frequently her utensils to maintain their attractive appearance.
A number of agents have been proposed to prevent tarnishing of silver or drunk. In general these compounds attach to the metal, forming a thin invisible film which prevents attack on the metal by sulfur or oxygen. An anti-tarnish agent which has been proposed is a mercaptan of general formula Rbd, in which R denotes a C12 to C20 straight chain alkyl radioal. We
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
assumes that this molecule attaches to the metal through a sulfur atom, leaving the straight chain alkyl radical as a protective shell on the metal surface.
It is also assumed that the alkyl chains standing on the surface of the metal are agglomerated to such an extent, by secondary valence forces, that it is impossible for oxygenates or sulfur compounds to penetrate the film and cause tarnishing of the metal. .
Although prior art anti-tarnish agents can be used alone, it is generally preferred for household uses to incorporate these agents into a pasty or liquid composition. This compsition, which can be used for polishing metals, eliminates tarnish with the presence of a mild abrasive agent, while it allows the clean surface to be treated with the anti-tarnish agent to prevent future tarnishing.
The present invention relates to an improved anti-tarnish agent and a polishing composition containing such an agent.
In accordance with the present invention, the metals liable to undergo tarnishing are protected by treatment with the aid of compounds corresponding to one or other of the following formulas HS-RSR 'and HS-R "-SR" -SH in wherein R is an alkylene group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, R 'aat selected from saturated aliphatic, saturated cycloaliphatic and unsaturated groups including those derived from polycyclic cycloaliphatic compounds, and alkaryl containing 5 to 25 atoms carbon and R "is an alkylene group containing 6 to 12 carbon atoms. Anti-tarnish agents corresponding to these formulas are superior to known agents which contain a mercapto group but do not contain a sulfide.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The most effective compounds have been found to contain no more than 25 carbon atoms, when the R and R 'groups are summed. Compounds containing no more than 25 carbon atoms when summing the R and R 'groups can be readily recovered by distillation. However, the compounds contemplated may contain up to 35 carbon atoms inclusive, although these compounds may be somewhat more difficult to purify than compounds containing no more than 25 carbon atoms.
As examples of compounds falling within the scope of the present invention, the following may be mentioned:

2-Mercapto, -thyl-n-octadecyl sulfide and tert-dodecyl 8-mercaptooctyl sulfide appear to exhibit the best balanced properties among the compounds of the aorta question classes which are commonly given preference.
Although the formulas given above encompass compounds containing branched chain alkylene and alkenyl groups, it is preferred to use the straight chain compounds.
Although the compounds can be applied directly to metal which has been previously cleaned, it is preferred to incorporate the anti-tarnish agent into a polishing composition. Such a composition also contains a finely divided abrasive polishing agent, such as chalk, silica or alumina. Natural or synthetic abrasive materials can be used. Abrasive powders are well known in the art and it is desired to use those described in US Pat. No. 2,205,115.
A satisfactory pulping composition will also contain a diluent. The amount of diluent depends on the consistency of the desired polishing composition. In general, a polar solvent can be used as the diluent, with preference being given to water or

a lower alooo7.
The anti-tarnish agents according to the present invention have a somewhat unpleasant odor. It is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
therefore, it is desirable to add a fragrance to polishing compositions intended for household use. Such perfumes are commonly available on the market.
To prevent the abrasive powder from separating from the suspension in which it is located, a small amount of an agent which keeps solid particles in suspension can be used. Such agents are well known to those skilled in the art.
A silver polishing composition may, for example, contain 1 to 50% 2-mercaptoethyl-n-octadecyl sulfide or tert-dodecyl 8-mercaptooctyl sulfide 5 to 98% abrasive, 0 to 5% d odorant and 0-1% suspending agent. A sufficient amount of dilute is then added to form a composition having the desired consistency. Similar compositions can be obtained using dimercaptosulfides, such as bis- (1-mercaptooctyl) sulfide.
The compounds of formula HS-RSR 'suitable for use in the context of the present invention can advantageously be obtained by reaction of a dithiol of formula HS-R-SH in which R has the meaning indicated above, with a monoolefin containing 5 to 25 carbon atoms.
The olefins which can be used for the preparation of a compound according to the present invention are monoolefins, including not only straight and branched chain monoolefinic hydrocarbons, but also cycloaliphatic and aromatic compounds comprising olefinic side chains.
Furthermore, it is also possible to use unsaturated cycloaliphatic compounds, both monocyclic and polycyclic. Straight-chain and branched-chain aliphatic hydrocarbons

are preferred. This reaction can be carried out by several means known to specialists. In general, a catalyst is used. It is preferred to use azobisisobutyronitrile as a catalyst, and to carry out the reaction at a temperature of between 66 and 149 G. Any other suitable method can also be used for the preparation of the compounds, in particular the reaction of a sulphide of. olefin with an aliphatic mercaptan, as described in US Pat. No. 2,490,984.
EMI7.1
The reaction is carried out agantageusenent in the presence of a catalyst of boron trifluoride and phosphoric acid.
The catalyst composition is prepared by treating orthophosphoric acid of varying water content with anhydrous boron fluoride, until complete saturation has been achieved. When using 100% phosphoric acid, an absorption of about 1 mole of boron fluoride per mole of acid occurs, while in the case of using aqueous solutions both the acid phosphoric acid that water absorbs boron fluoride at a rate of about one mole per mole. Although the Applicant does not wish to limit itself to any theory as regards the mechanism of the preparation of the catalyst, it assumes that a chemical combination occurs giving rise to the formation of a complex or of one or more. addition compounds.
In the case where the cn uses 100% phosphoric acid, its complex with boron fluoride has the empirical formula H3PO4 BF3. Similarly, catalysts prepared from aqueous phosphoric acid and boron fluoride can be considered as mixtures of compounds of formulas

83PO4'HB3 and H2O * B? 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The phosphoric acid used to prepare the preferred catalyst can be in concentrated form, that is to say at an concentration ranging from 85% acid of commercial quality up to about 100% H3PO4; this acid can also be in the form of aqueous solutions which may contain only 20 to 40% of H3PO4.
For most applications, moderately concentrated to concentrated acid is usually preferred. Commercial 85% aoid gives a very satisfactory catalyst when saturated with boron fluoride. Although we prefer to use. orthophosphoric acid to prepare the catalysts according to the present invention, other phosphorus oxygenated acids, such as, for example, phosphorous acid (H3PO3) in aqueous solution can also be used although they usually give catalysts less active.
One of the preferred compounds according to the present invention, namely tert-dodecyl 8-mercaptooctyl sulfide, is obtained by reacting propylene tetramer with 1,8 octanedithiol, using BF3-H3PO4 as a catalyst.
The reaction takes place advantageously at room temperature.
The two reactants are charged to a reactor in a molar ratio of about 0.4: 1 to 1: 3, and the catalyst is added in successive portions until the reaction ceases.
The compounds of formula HS-R "-SR" -SH can be obtained by irradiating, by means of ultra-violet light, hydrogen sulfide and a diene containing from 6 to 12 carbon atoms, so as to obtain a mixture dimercaptan and bie- (1-mercaptoalkyl) sulfide. The constituents of this mixture can be separated by any method known in the art.

Example 1
An anti-terroir agent consisting of 2-mercaptoethyl-n-octadecyl sulfide is prepared by adding 1,2-ethanedithiol to octadecene-1. Ootadeoene-1 and 1,2-ethanedithiol are introduced into a reactor and heated to 66 ° C., after which 1.5 grams of azobisisobutyronitrile are added. Due to the exothermic reaction, the temperature is raised to 138 ° C within about 10 minutes and this reaction is substantially complete after 45 minutes, as indicated by the sulfur analysis of the mercaptan.
The temperature is maintained at 71-93 ° C for a further 6 hours while a further 1.5 grams of AIBN catalyst is added. There is no further reaction to this. The crude product is subjected to flash disltillation in a rotary evaporator at a temperature of 132 ° C. and under a pressure of 0.5 to 1.0 millimeter of mercury, for 1 hour. The residual product from the flash distillation is then charged in a Brush still and all the products whose boiling point is less than 204 ° C. under an absolute pressure of 3 microns are distilled.
The yield of 2-mercaptoethyl-n-octadecyl sulphide is 60.5 moles per, or 0.83 kg of product per kilo of octadecene loaded. The purity of the product, determined by chromatography, is 95.8%.
For comparison, clean silver samples were treated with 2-mercaptoethyl-n-octadecyl sulfide and n-octadecyl marcaptan. These samples, along with an untreated sample, are exposed for 50 days to air with a high sulfur content in a laboratory. This treatment is considered to correspond to an exposure of at least

one year at normal atmosphere. At the end of the test period, it is observed that the untreated sample is strongly tarnished; it presents, in fact, a brown and dark blue coloration. As for the sample treated with n-octadecyl mercaptan, it shows a slight tan coloration and has completely lost its silvery sheen.
On the other hand, the sample treated with 2-
EMI10.1
mercaptoethyl-n-ootadecyl shows only very slight traces of tan coloration in certain areas, while remaining very bright.
Example 11
An anti-tbrnissement agent consisting of bis- (1-mercaptooctyl) sulphide is prepared by addition, initiated by ultraviolet light, of hydrogen sulphide to 1,7-octadiene. The two reagents are loaded into an equipped 6400 ml thermal siphon reactor. a 1200 watt ultra-violet lamp + te. The mixture is irradiated until there is little or no increase in the mercaptan sulfur content. The bis- (1-mercaptooctyl) sulfide produced is separated from 1,8-octanedithiol and 1,7-octadiene by vacuum distillation. The yield of bis (1-mercaptooctyl) sulphide is 21.6 mole%. The compound recovered has a thiol functionality of 1.95.
Clean samples of silver are treated with bis- (1-mercaptooctyl) sulphide and -octadecyl mercaptan. These samples, as well as an untreated sample, are exposed for 7 days to an atmosphere with a high sulfur content in a laboratory. At the end of this period, the untreated sample was found to have become severely tarnished, while the sample treated with n-octadecyl mercaptan and with bis- (1-mercaptooctyl) sulfide

Example 111
One of the compounds following the present invention, namely tert-dodecyl 8-mercaptooctyl, is prepared to appreciate its qualities as a tarnish inhibitor for copper and silver.
The product is in the form of a liquid having the clarity of water and having a purity of more than 99% by weight.
This compound is prepared by reacting 1,8-octanedithiol with propylene tetramer, using BF3-H3PO4 as a catalyst, as shown by the following equation:
EMI11.1
1,8-octanedithiol propylene tetramer tert-dodecyl 8-mercapto-octyl sulfide
The reaction is carried out in a reactor with a bed equipped with a stirrer driven by a motor, a reflux condenser and a thermocouple. The dithio3 and the propylene tetramer are placed in the reactor, after which the catalyst is added slowly in small portions, so that the reaction temperature can be controlled. Usually the time is increased from 3 to 8 C with each addition of 4 to 5 ml of catalyst until the reaction is complete.
At this point, no further increase in temperature occurs, upon further addition of catalyst.
The reaction is substantially complete after 2 hours, as indicated by mercaptan sulfur analytes from samples taken from the reactor.
At the end of the reaction period, we add
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
125 ml of hot water and the mixture is stirred for several minutes. A dense emulsion forms which has little tendency to break. A further 200 ml of water is added and the mixture is heated to 82-93 C, then sodium chloride is added to increase the density of the aqueous phase. The phases separate satisfactorily under these conditions. The organic phase is filtered through Drierite to remove the entrained water. There is a loss of about 30 grams of crude product during the washing and drying phases.
The crude product is charged ders a Brush still and is distilled at a temperature of 149 to 196 C and under an absolute pressure of 3 to 5 microns of mercury. All distilled fractions with a mercaptan sulfur content between 9.0 and 10.0 are considered to form the product.
Table I shows the conditions of the tests, the quantities of materials used and the properties of the product obtained. Although this table only reveals a product yield of 44.5 mole% on the bay of the dithicl consumed, a considerable amount of product was thrown into the light and heavy fractions, because the crude feed was too small, for allow efiective product reoperation.
It is assumed that the yield would be at least 20% higher if a large amount of product had been prepared.
