<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Suivant une première variante de l'invention (formule N 2) il est prévu d'ajouter aux constituants prévus dans la formule ? 1 un liant naturel ou synthétique, minéral ou organique, choisi dans le groupe formé par le silicate de sodium, les résines phénoliques et les liants amylacés, en que d'obtenir un aggloméré ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
1 ) que le oarbone entrant dans la composition de l'alliage en fusion subisse une oxydation;
2 ) qu'il v@ait, dans le bain de coulée, dos germes de bulles en quantité suffisante;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improved process for casting ferrous alloys and produced by derivative
The present invention relates to an improved process for the continuous or discontinuous casting of ferrous alloys in ingots or similar molds, with a view to causing effervescence in the casting bath or to regulate this effervescence, as well as an industrial product. for the implementation of said method.
It is known that the effervescence of the casting bath in the ingot mold conditions, to a large extent, the quality of the ingot or of the molded part; but its intensity and regularity cannot be predetermined, neither during ripening, nor in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ladle, as a result of the disturbances which occur in said bath and which are accentuated during its cooling and solidification.
It is therefore necessary to intervene during the casting in the mold; but the means implemented or proposed so far to regulate the effervescence therein, both according to the characteristics of the casting, such as its speed and its temperature, and according to the characteristics of the metal, in particular its carbon contents and manganese and the weight ratio Mn / C of oelles-oi, have been shown to be effective only in the case of very small variations of said characteristics; moreover, these means cannot be readjusted during the filling of the molds of the same ooulée.
It follows from the foregoing that the ingots or cast products of effervescent ferrous alloys very often have defects which appear during subsequent operations: during rolling, by bubbles too close to the side surface of the ingots which they pierce and by hollows lined with impurities that do not weld together; during stamping, by the formation of a peripheral wall of pure iron of too small a thickness making it impossible in particular to deep drawing.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks.
According to the invention, the method of casting ferrous alloys in molds such as ingot molds with a view to improving the effervescence of said alloys during the casting is characterized in that the casting bath is simultaneously supplied a manganese oxide and a compound itself comprising a first constituent which, in contact with the molten alloy, emits carbon monoxide, a second constituent which, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
same conditions, emits oxygen which may be accompanied by nitrogen and a third component which increases the fluidity of the casting bath,
This contribution produces an acceleration of effervescence in the event that this is insufficient, while preventing a rise in the alloy during its solidification,
above the level reached by this alloy when it is poured into the mold. From experience, it can be concluded from this lack of rise that the ingot has a good internal texture, with a healthy core and body, especially when the head of the ingot has, at its center, a small pointed outgrowth.
A subject of the invention is also a new industrial product for carrying out the preceding process, this product having the composition by weight below: Formula N 1 MNO2 or Mn64 in powder 10 to 50%
CO3Na2 powder 15 to 45%
NO3Na powder 8 to 12%
CaF2 or NaF powder 10 to 50%
According to a first variant of the invention (formula N 2) it is planned to add to the constituents provided for in formula? 1 a natural or synthetic, inorganic or organic binder, chosen from the group formed by sodium silicate, phenolic resins and starch binders, in which to obtain an agglomerate;
addition is made in the proportion of 2% to. 20% by weight of binder relative to the total of the constituents of formula N 1.
According to a second variant of the invention (formula? 3), provision is made for the manganese oxide to be supplied to the adhesive bath in powder form, the other constituents provided for in formula? 1 being agglomerated at
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
by means of a binder whose nature and proportion with respect to the powders to be agglomerated are the same as in the case of the formula
N 2.
The pulverulent compositions in accordance with the formula
N 1 are brought to the casting bath in one or more batches, between the start and the end of casting, either with a shovel or in a graduated container fitted with a handle, or in a destructible envelope made of paper or similar materials, in particular plastic, or by at least one chute.
The compositions in accordance with formula N 2 are used in the state of agglomerates, preferably in bars or in plates suspended in the mold before casting.
The effervescence consisting in the release of bubbles formed mainly of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, we understand that, for it to occur correctly:
1) that the oarbon entering into the composition of the molten alloy undergoes oxidation;
2) that there is, in the casting bath, back germs of bubbles in sufficient quantity;
3) that the molten alloy is sufficiently fluid so that the bubbles can escape before it solidifies.
This is why we add to the casting bath; a component which emits oxygen, such as sodium nitrate, a component which, at the temperature considered, emits carbon monoxide, such as sodium carbonate and a fluidifying component, such as a fluoride. unfortunately, experience shows that such a mixture is not very effective with alloys containing much more manganese than carbon, especially those in which the ratio between the manganese content and the carbon content is at least equal to 5.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
But it has been discovered that with such alloys the effervescence becomes more intense and more regular if, in addition to the constituents which have just been mentioned, a manganese oxide is added to the casting bath. The latter, although not in itself an effervescence accelerator, nevertheless confers on the bodies enjoying this property additional efficiency in the case considered. The combination of the supply of manganese oxide with the supply of an oxidant, a thinner and a carbon monoxide emitter therefore constitutes the essential characteristic of the new process.
The following example, given as an indication and without this being able to result in a limitation of the invention, will make it possible to illustrate glue.
An effervescent steel having a carbon content of 0.14% and a manganese content of 0.73% to 0.3% is poured into a seven-ton ingot mold. Classic effervescence accelerators, tested at doses varying from 300 g. at 900 g 'per ton of steel, give no appreciable result. An accelerator in accordance with the invention having the following composition is then tested at a dose of 460 g per tonne of steel:
MnO2 30% CONa 30%
NO3Na 10%
CaF2 30% plus a binder in the proportion of 10% of the total due four previous constituent.
With this new accelerator, we see that the rise of steel in the mold during its solidification is reduced in significant proportions,
