<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Jodium is slechts weinig oplosbaar in water.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

EMI4.4

This invention relates to sansen® counts in which iodine is contained and which are particularly useful as sanitizing agents in industry.
For a long time the iodine has been Smoking as @@ n broad spectrum, very strong germicid. In contrast to the hypochlorites, it does not undergo rapid deactivation in the presence of organic matter. The use of iodine solutions for decontamination is in high demand due to the self-warning property of the composition; the characteristic color indeed disappears completely in a solution that has lost its activity. It has also been found that iodine solutions are extremely effective without having to be brought to a high temperature.
Despite all these factors that argue in favor of the use of iodine, elemental iodine has many drawbacks. For example, when it comes into contact with the skin or animal tissue, the uncombined iodine causes a strong irritation, and with prolonged contact serious damage may occur.
It is also known that the iodine leaves those solutions very easily by volatilization. This process is much accelerated by a high temperature. The vapors generated are highly toxic when inhaled and present a danger there to the eyes and to the mucous membranes of the nose.
This property prevents the use of hot or boiling solutions without complicated safety measures.
Iodine is only slightly soluble in water. For example, a saturated solution of iodine in water contains little free iodine that is suitable for the bactericidal effect. Due to the stability of the ion 13-, however, the iodine is very soluble in the solutions of iodine:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
That balance is very much in favor of the right hand in an aqueous solution. The ion I exists in the form of a weakly bound complex, and all elemental iodine involved in such equilibrium can be said to be "available".
However, it is believed that the use of that equilibrium, with the understanding of obtaining an aqueous solution containing free iodine, is subject to great loss and therefore very expensive, since the iodine times are expensive chemical products that must be used in a concentration equal to half the molecular concentration of iodine and that it suffers significant losses due to the fact that the iodine does not contribute at all to the germicidal action of the composition.
Another major drawback of using iodine solutions lies in the fact that they have a tendency to leave strong stains, when touched simply, on the tissues, on the skin and on fabrics.
In order to have an effective bactericidal effect, an iodine solution must also have cleaning and penetrating properties. This effect can only be obtained by adding surfactants, since iodine reacts with a certain number of surfactants and is deactivated.
This invention relates to a composition with iodine the use of which alleviates or obviates the above-noted drawbacks. One of the objects of this invention is to prepare a composition containing iodine and one or more surfactants and having the following formula:
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>

for use dissolved in anionic surfactant so as to obtain a solution which is miscible with water and which can be diluted with water without limitation without causing the precipitation of the iodine. By way of example of similar surfactants, there may be mentioned castor oil, sulfated or sulfonated, and the sulfated salts of hydrocarbonated paraffin esters, such as the salts of alkaline metals. Alkyl aryl sulfates in the form of their salts can also be used. Accordingly, and according to a special marble of embodiments of the invention, the composition of the invention contains an anionic surfactant.
When the compositions of the invention are used, they can also be solubilized by means of certain cationic and non-ionic surfactants.

compositions are the alkyltri8ethyl-8880N8 halogens.
Other examples of suitable surface-active agents are d-alkyl pyridiniua halogens and the alkylquinoldiniua halogens.
Among the non-ionic reaction agents which are suitable, the following products may be mentioned: 1. Condensation products of ethylene alcohol fatty acids; 2. Dc. oondenH1: iepl'Odukte "of wthyl n- <tUtylf <nel

oxide;
3. The condensation products of polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide.
The compositions are preferably used in an acidic medium. A suitable acid medium can be obtained with the aid of an organic or an inorganic acid, preferably phosphic acid. The presence of a small portion of isopropyl alcohol has been found to facilitate solubility.
The compositions of this invention are an excellent vehicle for the available iodine.
Although one does not wish to limit oneself to one explanation or the other, it does appear that, in use, the compositions of the invention allow equilibrium between the iodine molecule and the amphoteric molecule. After the odium is used up, when the composition is used as a germicide for attacks against bacteriological proteins, etc., the composition undergoes dissociation, resulting in additional liberation of iodine. In this way, the total amount of iodine that was previously combined * with the amphoteric molecule is released and the "combination" of the iodine and amphoteric product acts as a source of available odium.
The content of free iodine for bacterial action of the compositions of this invention is high and they remain relatively non-deaactivated due to the presence of organics and animal tissue. They are remedial substances with fast effect, but they are less corrosive to metals than the same amount of freeodium.
They also have cleaning properties without diminishing their effectiveness as a result.

iodine to be combined with a surfactant amphoteric agent.
The combination is preferably carried out at a high temperature and, after the mixture has settled, the desired product can be poured off. The product can then be solubilized with the aid of a surfactant according to the previous description and then it can be dissolved in water. The PH of the aqueous solution thus obtained can then be reduced by adding an acid, such as the citric acid or the phosphic acid.
In order to properly understand the invention, the following examples are given, but are for illustrative purposes only: Example 1
78.5 grams of a solution of 55% p / p of the alkylated N-derivative of coconut oil of the acidum aminobutyricum (Factory Work "Armeen Z") are poured into a glass mixing glass and the temperature is raised to 40 ° C. Then 21.5 grams of iodine are slowly added while the mixture is always well stirred. Mechanical mixing is continued for 30 minutes.
By settling the mixture is separated into two parts, an upper, aqueous part and a lower, black layer containing the hydrophobic complex.
In the following we give examples of processes used to solubilize the bottom layer in order to produce a homogeneous, unstable system: a) 3 to 100 grams of the double layer mixture, prepared according to the procedure described above, 200 grams of a solution of 60% sulfonated castor oil are added with steady stirring.
The thick mixture is then diluted by adding 700 grams of water, resulting in a total product consisting of:

Example 2
57.0 grams of a solution of 55% of the alkylated N-derivative of coconut oil of the acidum amino-butiricum (Armeen Z) are poured into a glass mixing glass and 43.0 grams of iodine are added thereto. The two substances are mixed and the mixture is brought to a temperature between about 85 ° C and 99 ° C by means of a steam jacket.
The heating is maintained for 30 minutes.
At the beginning, the water will gather in an upper layer, but then gradually, when heating continues, the lower, oily layer will penetrate through the water, creating an equal, black liquid that, when cooled down to -10 C, is not separated.
