Electric heating device for a section of road.
The invention relates to an electric heating device for a section of road with the aim of preventing the formation of ice or ice in certain places, more particularly around a tunnel, bridge, crossing. or major bifurcation.
The protection of road traffic requires that motor vehicles approaching these particularly dangerous road areas be able to have their full braking capacities without running the risk of encountering frost or black ice.

In the current art, it is commonly made use of pre-assembled metal reinforcements in the form of lattices which are incorporated into the concrete base of the road, during its establishment.
In accordance with the present invention, the device for electrically heating a section of road comprises, as a heating resistor, the metal reinforcements incorporated in the concrete base of the section of road, such as pre-assembled trellises, and, as a current source, a means for transforming low or high voltage current into very low voltage and high intensity current, supplied to the armatures by suitably insulated cables. Use is therefore made of normal reinforcements to pass through them currents of relatively high intensity, the Joule effect of which causes sufficient heating to raise the whole of the concrete footing by a few degrees in relation to the external environment and avoid the formation of frost or ice.
The device further comprises a thermo-sensitive means, able to detect the formation of ice and to control the engagement of the means for transforming the current.
It also comprises means for interconnecting the elements of the metal frames. These means are suitably arranged for roads under construction, but for roads already built, they are advantageously provided at the edges of a road section, in order to be able to place them easily without

touch the upper road cover.
The appended drawing shows by way of example one embodiment of the invention. The single figure shows schematically the reinforcement of the bedding of a section of road and the supply of this reinforcement with very low voltage current.
The reinforcement incorporated in the concrete of the bed of a road is usually made up of trellises 1 mechanically connected to one another.
According to the invention, the trellises of a section of road which must be protected against the formation of frost or ice by electric heating constitute the heating resistor.
At each location to be protected, a transformer cabin is installed comprising, for example, a single-phase or three-phase transformer 2, the secondary of which is connected to the trellises 1, by means of low-voltage cables 3 correctly insulated which, under a voltage of about ten volts, are able to deliver currents of 5 to 15,000 amperes, so as to achieve a sufficiently high calorie supply to cause a rise in the temperature of the road from 2 to 3 compared to the atmosphere.
An electronic temperature-sensitive means (not shown) is associated with the contactors 4 of the transformer, detects the formation of ice and causes the transformer to switch on.
For roads under construction, adequate electrical connections are established between the various trellises which ensure a suitable distribution of the current carried by all of the reinforcements.
In the case of existing roads, the electrical connections between the trellises are preferably arranged at the edges of the road sections as shown at 5 ′, which can be done easily without affecting the upper covering of the road.
The device as described makes it possible to save

electric heating of sections of road which must be protected against the formation of frost or ice.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment which has been described and shown by way of example, and one would not depart from its scope by making modifications thereto.
