<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
EMI5.1
L'ensemble de-1"Inetallatlon fonctionne -comme suit (cfr schéma),
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Non-profit association in Brussels (Belgium) Process for the continuous casting of steel'-
The present invention relates to a process for the continuous casting of steel *
EMI1.3
In the current practice of making steel to the converter. the steel is poured into the ladle at the end of the operation and the additions necessary for deoxidation or grading are carried out in this ladle.
Thereafter. the ladle is transported to a separate hall where the steel is poured, either in an ordinary ingot mold or in a continuous casting mold.
One of the consequences of all these manipulations
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tion of liquid steel is obviously the significant drop in temperature occurring between the moment the steel is finished in the converter and the moment it is cast in the mold.
It follows that. if you want to introduce still liquid steel into the molds. it is necessary that at the outlet of the converter the temperature of the steel is at least 80 C higher than its solidification temperature, in the case of ordinary mold casting, and at least 100 C at
120 C in the case of continuous casting
It is appropriate to recall here that ¯ just before casting. the qualities and characteristics of ladle steel .. must be particularly monitored, the latter having to be 'homogeneous. both from the point of view of temperature and of its analysis.
Many steelmakers have become accustomed to carrying out certain operations in the pocket intended to enable these prescriptions to be observed. Among these, mention may be made of argon stripping to homogenize the steel, the addition of ferroalloys and carboniferous materials to adjust the analysis thereof. the supply of cooling agents to regulate the temperature.
Other steelmakers have considered placing between the retort and the casting installation (whether continuous or not) reheating furnaces of various kinds, intended in particular to impart to the steel which has left the converter. during cooling, a quantity of calories sufficient to raise the temperature to the level necessary for a satisfactory casting -
Still others have thought of carrying out the homogenization of the steel and its grading in a vacuum treatment installation interposed between the retort and the casting installation.
It is thus noted that following a common character to all these processes, one is led to carry out between the retort and the casting mold proper a certain number of rather expensive operations, which can be summarized as follows: - Ladle casting - transport of the ladle to a separate hall - ladle metallurgy or construction of various installations to homogenize the steel and adjust its analysis.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In order to be able to overcome the difficulties and the cost of these operations, attempts have already been made to supply a continuous casting installation directly from a continuous steel refining installation.
It quickly became clear, however, that this Method did not make it possible to do without an intermediate container. of the steel mixer type .. also intended for the gradation of the steel and its maintenance at temperature-
The object of the present invention is a new process making it possible to avoid these difficulties and drawbacks while retaining most of the advantages that continuous refining could have had.
The method which is the subject of the present invention is essentially characterized in that. after performing a pig iron refining operation in a solid-bottom converter or in an oven. the metal is poured directly into a casting installation. continuous or not-
The process of the present invention takes the opposite view of current ideas on this subject, because - it was considered that the difficulties of synchronization between the casting and refining cycles constituted a major obstacle., Necessarily involving the passage through a ladle - one had. rightly so. the concern to keep the maximum productivity of the refining machine.
It was difficult to control the composition and temperature of retort or furnace steel within particularly narrow limits.
The difficulties mentioned above are eliminated as follows.
It is interposed between the casting molds (continuous or not) and the converters or furnaces. a pouring basket. directly supplying said molds. and supplied itself directly by converters or ovens.
Such a basket acts as an intermediary between the converter (s) and the molds. As soon as a refining operation is completed. the converter
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
uninterruptedly pours all his steel into the basket. at a flow rate compatible with the emptying capacity of the basket. which also feeds an appropriate number of ingots. The refining-casting synchronization is thus ensured and the refining machines hardly lose their productivity. @
Shading and maintaining the temperature of the steel can be carried out in the retort with sufficient precision, blocking the slag according to means known per se) at the time of shading.
If necessary, the deoxidizing or nuancing additions can be carried out or completed in the pouring basket.
The process of the invention can be carried out by means of conventional converters or in refining furnaces. eg. Martin or electric ovens. however, preference is given to converters with a solid base, which can rotate about their longitudinal axis. which makes it possible to obtain an excellent metal-slag mixing before the casting operation.
In accordance with the present invention, and following an example given without limitation, it is possible to envisage implementing the method of the invention, using two converters of the LD-KALDO type. pouring their steel directly and alternately into the same pouring basket.
The steel is refined in a retort. according to the LD process. after stirring, the slag is scuffed, after a period of rotation of the converter around its longitudinal axis, the steel is graded while blocking the slag. which makes it possible to maintain the temperature of the steel at the desired value at ¯ 10 C.
In order to perfectly adjust the synchronization of the process, the converter is fitted with devices capable of controlling the flow rate of the steel and possibly with a cover intended to reduce heat losses during casting. If necessary, the cover can be fitted with means for supplying calories to the bath (eg an oxy-fuel burner).
The method of the invention makes it possible to reduce
EMI4.1
a.ns1bl.nt the investment costs. charging and processing in steelworks.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Indeed. we can consider removing pockets, transfer cars. casting bridges. as well as part of the halls (reduction of investment costs). Secondly. the loss of temperature caused by the pocket head is suppressed, which increases the metering of grapeshot, reduced and eliminates pocket bottoms. These two factors reduce the costs of metal charging.
In addition, the labor concentrated around the bags can be eliminated, as well as the consumption of refractory by the bags and their maintenance (lower processing costs).
It should be noted that according to the invention. steel is only cast when its analysis and temperature are known and comply with the desired values. The mixing and degassing operations in the ladle are therefore eliminated.
The method of the invention also makes it possible to provide for the use of two twinned converters instead of one but only one of which will be blown. All the service, feed and raw materials and dust removal installations will be common. to these converters. These can alternately feed the same casting basket or each feed a separate basket connected to a separate casting machine. This arrangement allows for substantial savings in the establishment costs of the steelworks.
Example. The example given below without limitation makes it possible to understand how the process of the invention can be implemented. in the case where the production cycle and the casting cycle are identical.
The retorts of the steelworks are associated two by two, all the supply, service, dust removal installations ... are common to the two retorts of the same pair, Following each set of two retorts, there is a hole - wind two continuous casting machines, each preceded by their basket.
EMI5.1
The set of-1 "Inetallatlon works -as follows (see diagram),
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Retort '1 follows the following cycle: blowing - casting - blowing - casting ...
Retort 2 follows the same cycle but shifted by half, -period: casting - blowing - casting - blowing- ..
@ Each retort is associated with a casting machine. which itself follows the following cycle @ 'casting - preparation - casting - preparation.
All the cycles can be represented in the form of the attached table.
This table shows that. thanks to the judicious phase shift of the cycle of one retort relative to that of the other. casting machines can be obtained which can ensure uninterrupted steel production.
